GPU upgrade dilemma

Okay you'll have to forgive me I'm still a relative newcomer to PC gaming as I've been at it for less than 2 years so help and advice is going to be hugely appreciated.

I'm looking at an upgrade within the next 3 - 4 months although sooner will probably be better given what I'm hearing about requirements for some upcoming games.

Here's what I currently have:

NZXT Phantom 630 case, Corsair GS800 PSU, Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5 motherboard, AMD FX-8350, 16GB DDR3 RAM, Nvidia GTX 670 x 2 in SLI

It's served me well so far and I'm still maxing out everything except Watch Dogs (but the less said about that one the better). I've been looking at both the GTX 970 and 980 as possible replacements. However, if I go with the 970 the likelihood is that I'll pick 2 of them up to SLI again as I'm also looking to pick up the ASUS 1440p G-Sync monitor in the not so distant future.

So, my question really is, should I go ahead with the 970's, the 980 or wait for something else to come along? My worry is that some upcoming games are already said to be utilising 4GB of VRAM and more (Evil Within, Ryse, Shadow Of Mordor) so how long would I expect to game at 1440p with the 2 970's maxing out games?

Ideally I'm holding out for a GPU with 8GB VRAM as I hear it's long been a rumour. Trouble is no one knows when or indeed if these will come along. My other little concern….would my CPU be a problem going forward with any of the above set ups?

I guess I'm asking, should I go for it now or hold out and will my current set up hold out for the time being? Any advice would help me immensely.

Cheers

Thanks for that, pretty much the answer I was hoping for. Looking at the Gigabyte G1 Gaming ones and the MSI ones at the moment.

Just a couple of things then...firstly, will my rather modest AMD FX-8350 prove to be a a bottleneck going forward?

Secondly, how long can I expect 2 970's to perform at 1440p? I'm hoping to not have to upgrade for a good 3 to 4 years after this.

the 8350 is a pretty damn good processor.. it may not be in the league of intel, but overclocked it can keep up with an i5 give or take 10/15%, but its a very good processor in my opinion, i have the 6350 and never been happier

970sli will rip through 1440p!

yea around 3 years I would expect before even thinking about upgrading
