GPU upgrade for a DELL 460

i wouldnt get to optimistic about that, your psu might have a 6 pin, but 350w wont power a whole lot beyond the pcie slot and so far not all the new cards are living up to their hype.

Hmmm... Well if thats the case what do you think my options are? If i spend £30 on a new psu i obviously have a lot more options but wouldn't those cards be more expensive?
I can stretch my budget to £200 but I'm not sure how much that helps.

Right. I went ahead and bought a RX470, this one. When it arrived I read the specs on the box which said it recommended a 450W PSU so I bought a 500W PSU to go with it. Here.

And nothing happens. The fans all spin but there's no signal going to the monitor. No signal at all, no start up, no chance to go into bios settings, just a blank screen. The power cable is plugged in to the card and connected to the monitor via HDMI. I've tried removing all the old drivers before installing and updating the bios.

I can only think of two possibilities now, the card is DOA or doesn't work with my motherboard. It only has a PCIE 1 slot and the card is PCI 3, I read elsewhere that PCIE is backwards compatible, it would be slower but it would work.

Can anyone suggest anything or should I return the GPU and get something older that might work?

I'd expect it's a bios issue todo with UEFI.

Check if there is a newer bios available from dell and install the latest.

If that doesn't work, you will likely run into the same issue with most cards made in the last few years - you will need a card that is non-UEFI designated.

I believe Nvidia 6 series and amd 5 series *should work. However check before.

* you can get newer cards that have special dual bios, with both uefi and old style, such as the evga 960 gaming. - Again check first.

That and sometimes just lack of connectors entirely. Plus Dell motherboards are backwards so the card ends up being the wrong way up (fan facing upwards, so they collect far more dust etc). The Dell PSUs tend to be pretty crappy as well.

A new/better PSU won't fit the dell case and the motherboard won't fit a standard case. They have it all stitched up :P

You're working from old information I'm afraid; Dell have mostly used standard hardware in in their desktops for many years now. My XPS 8300 is about five years old and is a completely normal ATX motherboard with a completely normal (and, by OEM standards, relatively decent) ATX PSU. No missing or proprietary connectors, no upgrade issues.

Thanks. That's not great news. I believe I have the latest bios from Dell the A06 version here, but it was last updated in 2014. I currently have a AMD HD5450 which I assume is the 5 series you mention. It's not good for running anything much, I only get 14fps on Alien Isolation for exapmle. Which is why I wanted the upgrade in the first place. What should I be looking for regarding UEFI, it's not something I've seen listed in GPU specs?

TheVoice, you're right about the PSU no problem at all fitting it in.

There does appear to be much conflicting information about regarding what cards support legacy/uefi bios's.

Regarding your question about what you should be looking for regarding uefi/legacy. It 'should be listed' however normally isn't. People are expected to have the latest stuff, so backwards comparability isn't usually advertised. It needs to have legacy support, or dual/legacy-uefi bios with a switch.

If I was in your shoes and budget is limited. I'd be looking on the bay for a second hand amd or nv card from around that that era 2010-2012/13.
Probably not the best comparison, http://hwbench.com/vgas/radeon-hd-5450-pcie-x1-vs-geforce-gtx-670 However the charts at the bottom show the difference in potential performance. A second hand 670 should be around £50 and will work with a legacy bios *if that is the issue. - someone could recommend a AMD equivalent - if you prefer.

you can also see the difference in power consumption, 19 watts vs 170 watts. GPU's from that era were getting power hungry - You have a new psu so all should be fine.

It could also be possible as thevoice mentioned, that the motherboard is the same in the xps systems. - Dell *may have a newer bios available for the motherboard, however not made it available if you select your vostro system - I have encounterd that before. - Imo not a risk worth taking unless you really have solid information/confirmation, as things can go really bad fast.

A06 is the latest BIOS available for mine as well.

I've heard of various people upgrading to 900-series GeForce cards too so I can't see any reason to be looking at ancient stuff.

Well it looks like there's no way the rx470 will work so it will have to go back, unless I really bite the bullet and buy a new motherboard and possibly CPU as well.

TheVoice, do you mind if I ask what GPU you have as it could be my best bet of getting a compatible card given you have the same MB. I don't like idea of buying cards that might or might not work.

I still have the 6870 mine came with, been looking at a 470/480 or 1060 lately but it looks like the former is no longer an option!

Either that or I'll go for a cheap 970.

After thinking about it for a while I'm going to keep the 470 and get a new motherboard and CPU. It really wasn't what I was intending but it makes more sense than trying to make a modern GPU work with an old motherboard. I'll be off to get some advice from the CPU and MB forums.

Thank you all for the help.

Get a 500W 80+ Bronze PSU for about £35 and buy the £117 GTX 770 in the clearance section.

The hardware is dated, but it's not a bad shout with that budget.

EDIT: only just saw how old this thread is.

£117 for a refurbished GTX 770 is a terrible deal anyway. There was a Gainward GTX 780 Phantom GLH in the clearance section for under £100 yesterday, so I don't know where they're getting £117 for a 770.
