I'm considering a jump up from my current 3070 and I'm torn between a 5070 or 7800XT. I've found both for < £450 (basically an absolute maximum as we're building an office) but as usual, I'm struggling with the decision making process...

I'm primarily running Linux for gaming at 3440x1440 and so far on Nvidia it's been a perfect and flawless experience (unlike a few years ago), but got Windows dual booted for a very select few like BF6. I do occasionally stream (mainly WoW) for friends unable to attend etc and I understand that Nvidia wins out there, but not sure it's enough to force the green hand. I don't care too much about RT performance - I use a 3070 :cry:

The 7800XT card is PowerColor who I know are one of the good AMD brands, the 5070 is an ASUS Dual model so I feel like it could be a little on the hot side and potentially not run as well as most reviewed cards, but both of these are identical in price (give or take 10p)

There is a Powercolor 9070 on offer here for £459 at the moment. I'd take that over the 7800xt for £9 as its newer generation and supports FSR4 etc.

Isnt linux better supported on AMD?

Ooh I might take a little look at the 7090.. AMD is technically better supported, but Nvidia seems to have come a long way - I believe Nvidia have started to actually provide support now(?). Adaptive sync works great on KDE and I get better gaming performance than Windows already.
 
I went from a 3070ti to a 9070XT.

50% uplift for what I paid for the 3070ti.

I personally wouldn’t bother at anything lower and definitely not with 12GB VRAM. The 7800XT will give you on average, 25% performance uplift at 1440p over the 3070. For another £90, you’ll double that and get better ray testing performance and FSR4 support.

If I'm going higher though, would the 5070 make more sense than that the 9070XT? The ASUS Prime 5070 is 499. My god I hate playing the "if I just spend a liiiiittle more..." Game xD

No, the 5070 is slower than a 9070 XT.

9070 XT competes more closely with a 5070 Ti.

If I had a hard limit of £450, I'd get the 9070 non-XT (Powercolor Reaper @ OCUK), much better card overall than the 7800XT you were considering.
