I'm in the process of finding a Q6600 to replace my faulty E5200. Next thing on the list is a new GPU. The 5670 has been great but I would like something with a little more power. The 5670 will be used for a HTPC.

Would be happy to consider a used item from the MM but looking for some guidance.

Depends on your budget. If you are considering around £100, then the Sapphire 5850 Extreme for £120 on today only is you best bet...faster than all the cards around that price range (GTX460 1GB/GTX550Ti/6850 etc), and can be overclocked from 725MHz to 900MHz, where it would be as fast as a 5870 (if you get a 5870 now, you can't really overclock so it's not really worth the extra money).

I've found a XFX 6850 for £118 - only a couple of quid cheaper than the 5850

What about power usage? I'm really torn here.

5850 is about 10% faster than the 6850, but it does require two PCI-E 6-pin connectors, whereas the 6850 only need one. Power consumption wise from what I remember...the 6850 is about 20-30W lower under load.

However, the custom cooler on the Sapphire 5850 Extreme should be quieter than the XFX custom cooler.
