Dear learned members of OCUK.

After 4 years of sterling service my 7990 has decided to die on me this morning so I need an upgrade. I currently game at 1440P but over the years I have rarely used the 7990 to its full potential so it's been running off one chip! So it's an upgrade from 7970 I guess!

Rig Specs:

i7-4770k OC to 4.2 Ghz
Gigabyte Z87X-OC Mobo
Seasonic X Series 750W "Gold Plus" PSU.

I have a budget of around £500 but that can be a little flexible if it's going to make a massive difference to performance. No particular affinity to AMD or Nvidia but I must admit the availability of freesync and prices there look good.

Hit me up with the best price v performance please! Thanks.

is your screen freesync or g-sync ? 60hz standard or can it go higher?

few options, cheapest gtx 1070 and one of the cheapest 3rd party boards
cheapest gtx 1080, also few other brands at this price all on sale- no idea when it ends
and Vega 56- which you can flash 64 bios to gain clock speeds and vram voltage- under volt it and overclock and you'll have vega 64 performance for cheaper - ish ... since 56 has gone up in price lots :(

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,790.06
(includes shipping: £11.10)

seems gtx 1070 would suit your needs just fine at 1440p 60hz gaming :D

Sorry forgot screen specs. AOC Q2770PQU 27" 60hz I think.

Not taken the plunge to 144hz or gsync / freesync but I am definitely thinking about it.

unfortunately 24" 1440p

you can see g-sync is more costly screen option

food for thought

I am leaning towards 1080 or vega 56 and upgrading the monitor later.

Want to "futureproof" as much as possible and they do seem to be evenly matched.

vega is just hot and power hungry- 3rd party cards might be a while and no idea if they'll be cheaper or cost more- reference PCB was pretty hard core it seems

undervolting and overclocking helps vega a lot

I guess the question is. is Vega 64 worth an extra £80 over 56?

Remember you can flash the bios to get them gains on the 56, there is another option in the Nvidia camp it’s a dark horse with lots of speculation and that’s a 1070ti, not sure how it’s going to fit in with the 1070-1080 performance wise.

Very true. That is definitely how I am leaning, unfortunately with no working graphics card I want to order something by the morning which rules the 1070ti out really.

Well if you need a fix urgently then it’s a case of AMD or Nvidia, both have options and obviously you can get free sync/g sync screen to go with either Nvidia does come out a tad more expensive
