Existing spec:
conroe e4300 core2duo socket 775
nvidia 7600gs passive cooled
4gb ddr2 ram

My htpc setup is struggling to playback 1080p youtube media (coping ok with 720p ok]

Looking for advice in upgrading the gpu preferably using a good pre used example off mm or the bay. prefer passive cooled.

Many thanks

Wow I actually had this setup on mum's PC or very like it (E6600, 7600gs)

The problem is the GPU. I picked up something cheap a GT430 I think it was for about £40 it was then, everything was great after that could even play some older games titles on High settings but basically anything with CUDA or DXVA will handle HD video just fine where CPU alone will struggle.

thanks all for the replies. i have previously run a q6600 though went back to the e4300 as it suits my main need well for web browsing and better efficiency/ low heat

Thanks noted about cuda/dxva capable which will hopefully take workload off cpu.. do not game on this as have dedicated console. in. price £15-20 will suit my budget for this system. will keep a look out for a Used silent version of the gt430......anything similar gpu to consider?

An alt option that might be worth a look at - if its just video playback a motherboard with soldered Atom (recent gen) processor would do the job. A little bit more than £20 but shouldn't be too much second hand along with a stick or 2 of cheap ddr3.
