Hey guys,

I'll keep this brief...

i7 3930k machine with HD 7970 = No display despite running absolutely fine for 2 years.

i7 3930k machine with HD 5770 = Working display.

AMD Athlon 64 machine with HD 5770 = Working display.

AMD Athlon 64 machine with HD 7970 = ... Working display?! WTF!!!

I have no idea why the above would be happening so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

A very strange one. Did you try the 7970 in a different slot, just to rule out that? Could be a picky PCI-E slot.

Other than a different Mobo BIOS, I have no idea at all :( Does the 7970 show in the BIOS? I seem to recall something similar on a GPU and they had to fiddle in the BIOS to get the 7970 to work on boot but can't remember.

BIOS update on your motherboard is my first idea. What motherboard board are you running (and check if it has a revision number as well) in your 3930k and brand and model 7970 are you using?

Sounds like a BIOS update is required.

He did say that it used to work fine though?

Any chance that the motherboard autoselects the onboard GPU to display for some reason?

In other words, connect your monitor with the motherboard DVI/hdmi/VGA if you are not getting a signal from your discrete GPU and see what happens.

If thats the case you can change the bios settings to use the discrete GPU alone.

Process of elimination!

The 3930k doesn't have onboard graphics.

You need to expand a bit on when it stopped working. You say its been running absolutely fine for 2 years but when did it stop working ? In your PC, someone elses etc.

Any other hardware changes ? Same DVI cable used in all tests ? Same port on 7970 used in all tests ? Have your tried using the output of all the connections on the 7970 ? Both DVI's, Display port ?? etc

Need more data!
