GPUZ Perfcap Reasons - GTX 980 - unexpected readings

I wondered why my benches were lower than people with similar setups.

When running anything gpu intensive i seem to be getting throttling.

My card is stock but i can see it going from around 1227mhz down to just over 1100mhz.

When the card hits 80 degrees the reason is thermal I get that I can change fan profile but i am also getting power related messages. Only if i run a 3dmark demo does my card hit 80 degrees. During benching the runs are so short it doesn't hit it.

I have a Gold rated FSP 750w PSU which should be fine for this card.

Im running 2 SSD's 1 mech drive, a H100 and 5 fans so cannot see how it would be taxing the PSU.

Anyone else had this?? Is it new PSU time? I was planning on getting another 980 and was hoping my 750w would cut it.

80c is the default throttle temp on 980, put fans to 100% and retest. You should have no throttling then.

Fan on 70% keeps temps nice and low still getting throttling the screen shot above shows the perfcap reasons im seeing (Pwr, VRel) the throttling comes later but i was trying to get a screen grab of the actual reasons.

My card is stock no overclocking used afterburner to set fan at 70%

See TDP is hitting 101, you simply need to raise the power limit in AB till you're no longer hitting it. The stock cooler is perfectly capable of going all the way to 125% but you won't need that much with stock clocks. Raising this allows the card to draw more current when it's required, you may find without raising this you have occasional stuttering too.

crazy!

didn't know it wouldn't have enough juice to run at stock!

my 4k fire strike results have gone up just from giving it a bit more juice not even touching the clocks.

Stock volts stock fan - 2939 (thermal and power throttling)
Stock volts higher fan speed - 2980 (power throttling)
103% volts higher fan speed - 2987 (still power throttling)
108% volts higher fan speed - 3000 (still power throttling)
110% volts higher fan speed - 3018

im usually a stock man but this has annoyed me having to play with the card at stock speeds. Maybe i should have bought a pre overclocked one!

Thanks for advice

I had a gtx 760 and 680 and they both did this, I RMA'd both of them in the end as no one could help me sort it, as if it was something so simple!!!

Im curious why does the OPs use 101% tdp and mine is only 91% with the same voltage?

below screeny is running heaven for 5mins

Because they're two separate applications in two separate working conditions / systems

The power limit is only called upon when the current is required. Heaven isn't as power hungry as Firestrike.

Raising the power limit only allows for more current to flow, it doesn't necessarily mean the card needs it that often.

All air coolers are capable of expelling the maximum allowed TDP on Maxwell. Plenty of headroom as most were designed with Kepler in mind

I am curious as to why my card cannot handle anything at stock clocks.

do i have a duffer? Having to increase power limit to run a synthetic benchmark at stock clocks seems a bit off to me.
