Grabit and SSL Issues...

Hi all,

Just upgraded to 50mb Virgin. Been using grabit fine for years without SSL but I thought I'd get it with giganews seeing as they have an offer on at the minute. Anyway, sometimes grabit is ok with ssl on, port 563 or 443 and other times it freezes / crashes.

I'm gutted as I really like grabit because it's clean and simple to use. Is there a news reader our there thats as good as grabit, in terms of simplicity?

I think theres a giganews accelerator piece of software that can do ssl encryption so it doesnt have to be enabled in grabit but not looked into it.

I set up the vpn from giganews too but my connection speed dropped quite a bit so not going to have that, but thats another topic.

Hope someone can help?

SABnzbd supports SSL and is really easy to work, especially if you have an account with a well known NZB site; just stick in the report ID (or have it automatically download your bookmarks) and away you go.

Also try Unzbin, which has a very uTorrent-ish layout. Very simple and effective.

I tend to use AltBinz (donator's version which is MUCH better, for a one-off small payment), or NewsLeecher, but Unzbin is decent as well as free. :)

Thanks everyone for your help. I've gone for Unzbin for now. Really easy to use and not cluttered like a lot of them. Still prefer the look of grabit but I'll get used to it. Just used grabit for years and years so it feels odd using something else.

Best thing though is SSL works! :D

Thanks again,

Can you give us a screeny of altbinz donation version please?

Just curious. :)

I use GrabIt and SSL has never worked consistently for me either. Unfortunately the app doesnt get a lot of development. I'll look at those alternatives too.

I would ditch GrabIt, use SADnzbd. I made the switch and never looked back.

I'll have a look at that one now then cheers. I hate making switches though. :eek: lol

It's a shame it doesnt get anymore dev as I've always liked it. Plus I paid for the search facility on it yesterday before I got 50mb. That was a waste of 5 euros.

Its taking forever to download from their site, the installer that is.

Hope I can download quicker when using their newsreader. :D

+1 Only program I've used and never had one problem with it. SSL has always worked fine. :)

Tried it. Sorry, I don't like it. Stuff all over the place and I don't like how it opens in your browser. Thanks anyway, think I'll stick with unzbin for now.

Very easy. Drag and drop the nzb, click connect and it downloads and unpacks the files you want and deletes everything you dont want.

I've heard about stunnel. Is it easy to set up?

RoEy

Yep, simple config file, no need to be installed either [upto version 4.11], just run it from a directory of your choice.

config file is stunnel.conf:-

--------------
client = yes

[nntp]
accept = 119
connect = news.server.address.here:563

------------------------------------------

Then in Grabit on the server properties page:-

Hostname: 127.0.0.1
port: 119

username: whatever

password: whatever

Just read that giganews provide a similiar program to stunnel too. Might try it.
