Gradual upgrade leading to VR Oculus

My current system...

ASUS P8Z77-V PRO
i7-2600K
16GB DDR3
GTX 660Ti

I'm getting on a bit now and don't do games, but would like to sit with a VR headset on and experience some of the latest visual possibilities, so I think 'gaming spec' is called for.

Looking for advice on how to make gradual upgrade if that's feasible.

My MB is going faulty so I'd like to replace that first with one that will be up to the job of running VR, but if possible for now just swap over current CPU, GPU and DDR3 memory, then upgrading GPU and CPU to more powerful i7 and memory to DDR4 sometime later.

Is that an option?

As for the budget, what it will take without going overboard to run VR.

2600k + 16gb ram is sufficient cpu power for vr
it's your graphics card that needs an upgrade :)

also if you want to replace your cpu/mobo, you cannot reuse your ram as it's ddr3 and the latest boards only take ddr4 (they're incompatible)

if you want to go the 2nd hand route to reuse your ram, then you're looking at a 4790K+z97 combo

OK, thanks both for the info. I thought I needed more than just a graphics upgrade, so that's the good news. The mobo is failing though so will have to think what to do.

Thanks again, clearer about the options now.
