Graduated with a 1st, no job

You also can't really relax so to speak because one slip up and a 60% and you need an 80% to make up for it. Obviously I'm speaking from experience of an engineering degree where getting a 1st is fairly impressive.

Yep...you got it in one.

To get a first, you have to put in a lot of dedication and effort. And as alx stated, you have to be consistent...unless of course you are prodigiously gifted and can basically "turn it on", at will, without even trying.

For most of us mortals, to get a first, we have to work our behinds off.

It can get even more complicated though - I know a number of universities where certain lecturers give much higher marks than others. This becomes useful when submitting a dissertation which is worth a large proportion of your overall degree. Equally there are a number of lecturers who mark very harshly.

I know that every year there are inbdividuals who get a 1st and only deserved a 2:1 and vice versa.

As they say, life isn't always fair. Ultimately it comes down to the interview. A 2:1 or 1st, plus a good CV should get you an interview. Few places will only accept a 1st degree classification.

Getting the odd 70%+ mark isn't hard, it's doing it consistently that's hard. Also, you never really know when a piece of work is 70%+ because you don't have the mark scheme, so you always have to put that extra effort in to guarantee the grade.

Exactly,

Something people fail to acknowledge is the random marking at University, even in Engineering, we don't just do sums with a right or wrong answer.

My favourite module which I was ace at and did plenty of research outside of rewarded me with a 55% but one of the hardest modules I didn't fully get gave me a 67%. Random marks are random!

What do I do? im unemployed, I dont know what way to turn

should have probably thought of that at the start of your uni time. only thing i'm glad is i haven't paid for your nights out on the beer while you were studying something that didnt get you a job. you could always invest more money into some uni course that will get you a job.

Not read all the posts but bear in mind you don't pay tax, council tax, student loans or anything like that when you do a phd.

Your take home wage will look pretty similar to most graduate schemes.

Not always true - I pay tax, NI and student loans back on my PhD funding, although my funding is higher than a standard EPSRC (and the sort) grant. No council tax though, so every cloud and all that!

He's not going to get much more employable than a first from a russell group in engineering

Hixxy, that's harsh and doesn't actually help Rockitt5, in any way.

he doesn't need or want help anyway, he's trolling

Yeah good point, I did basically all my work this year as best as I could within reason. But that's only because I had my 'fun' etc. and slacked the first two years, so one year (well 6 months really) of effort when 30k of debt is waiting for you was worth it to me.

Agree with that completely.

This quote seems apt:

"Good students can, with difficulty, escape poor teaching; they can't escape poor assessment."

If you decide to use this troll again, remember that postgraduate degrees are not classified in the same way as undergraduate degrees. A first class Masters degree is a fallacy.

If you decide to try and correct someone again, have a clue. It isn't just engineering either.

You have a first class Masters Degree? I doubt that very much.

I think you should do a little bit more research. You CAN get a 1st Class Masters :)
