Right, it looks like my mother needs a new motor. She's not fussed about toys, her present motor doesn't even have PAS, for example.

However, it needs to be cheap as chips to maintain, so it needs cheap and available parts, and they need to be relatively simple to fit, as I'll probably end up having to do most of it (spend Sunday fixing her brakes where her neighbour had "done her a favour" of fitting new shoes, but never refitted the drum properly).

It needs to be fairly small, she doesn't like barges, bless. It also needs to be reliable enough as she lives in the sticks, up a huge hill in Derbyshire.

I'd rather the new motor to have PAS, but apart from that, not worried about gadgets.

So, suggestions of things to be looking at for around a grand, please.

I'd imagine a fiesta 1.25 zetec would be worth a look, Polos? Golfs? Micras?

To be honest all of the lower end marques produce cars which are pretty much equal when it comes to a choice for a car like this.

I'd be getting her a Corsa or a fiesta probably. Get a reasonable trim level as they dont cost any more, she will then have electric windows and pas which will seem quite upmarket to her. They are both very cheap to run and are very reliable.

i looked at a fiesta zetec recently
[but then blew all my cash on a saxo]
went for a spin in one and they are pretty nice
power steering is nice on them and would be good for someone who wants something easy to drive

my old fiesta was so easy to maintain
proper haynes manual job!!!:D

word of advice
check the inside of the oil cap as they get gunked up easily and all that i have seen seem pretty prone to rust under the rear arches

just my 2 cents
