Graphic Card Comparison Chart

You make a very good point. Perhaps you can advise me on the same problem based on the games I intend to run?
My system is quite high spec so there are no bottlenecking problems. My choices come down to (mainly) EVGA GTX 470, XFX 5870, 6870 (all at a £200 price point).

My key games for this system to run will be :
Civ 5
Elder Scrolls Oblivion (heavily modded)
Crysis
Metro 2033
Arkham Asylum

I have a 6870 and can tell you its a great card in all respects apart from overclocking. Basically the 5870 is the fastest of the bunch at stock clocks with the gtx470/6870 being pretty much on par. If you like to overclock the gtx470 will pull ahead of the other cards on your list. Looking at the games your playing atm i would go for the gtx470 as long as you can put up with a little more noise and heat as thats the biggest weakness the fermi architecture has.

Oblivion will play great on all the cards.

Civ 5 runs better on nv atm

Crysis even though its an nv backed games will run better on the amd cards.

Metro the 3 cards will run pretty similarly.

Batman should run better on the gtx470 and you can use physx.

For me you should get a gtx470.
