Graphic card for HD

What's the best graphic card for HD media, it will be used on a 1080p HDTV.

Does Nvidia or ATI perform best in terms of resolution refresh rates etc?

It will also be used to play games at the same resolution.

Just about every gfx card will cope with HD playback as most of the load is put on the CPU. So it depends which games you want it to run really.

Far Cry 2, GTA 4, Saints Row 2, COD 5, GRID etc.

I am considering the 4870. Would the 512mb or 1gb version be best for 1080p?

GRID will like the 1GB version for sure at that res.
