Anyone know of a cheap, good place to get my card repaired? It needs a reflow me thinks.

It is an old card so paying silly money is not really an option.

Thanks

I've tried baking and reflow with Nvidia bumbgate stuff - one 8800GT and a 8600M MXM - and while I got both to work after baking, they didn't last long. The 8600M lasted about three months the first time then I re-baked and lasted another two months or so. Similar for the 8800GT. After that 'baking' them did nothing ('baking' since the 8600M was done with a heatgun the 2nd time).

Unsure if my baking damaged something or if due the nature of the solder fault on those Nvidia cards any reflow is only temporary. I'm inclined to belief that while it has something to with (bad) luck, reflows are not a long term solution. And that's what the opinion of most of the threads from technicians who do these repairs.

A reball may last longer but with the Nvidia bumbgated parts, the bad solder is not just the BGA blobs but inside where the chip is connected to the package. Therefore I would not spend money on a reball either.

However, if you do try the oven trick and the card works it may be worthwhile running the fan at 100% or getting a better heatsink/fan since what you don't want is card to go through too many heating-cooling cycles. I actually underclocked the 8800GT by around 40% to keep it cool but like I said it did eventually fail.

The issue is with the solder. Reflowing it just gets it back to normal but doesn't fix the underlying issue of the solder hardening then slowly fracturing during the load cycle - heating and cooling.
