Hi folks!

I currently have a 8600GTS as per my sig, but for some reason it wont let me run certain games. (Some of you might have read my thread in the PC game section about this) What I am thinking of doing is downgrading my graphic card so I might be able to run them, the games are Cossacks and American Conquest. The suggestions I need from you is what card to go for? It seems like a 7900GTX (or GTO) is similar in performance as the 8600GTS but after reading a few threads here about the 7 series is seems like a 6800 card might be even better?

I am a bit of a n00b when it comes to this kind of things, which is why I am asking for your help in this matter! :o The card will be run on whats is in my sig and the games I play is mostly, SimCity Societies, Sid Meiers RailRoads, Civilization III and IV, CivRome, Rise of Nations, Age of Empires I - III, and so on.. I am sure you getting the gist of what kind of games I want the card to be able to handle.. Also, the card is sometimes used in dual mode with my Samsung monitor and my Philips HD Ready 26" TV.

So what would you suggest me to do? Wait for nVidia to get some drivers out tha will make my card able to run the games I want to, get a 7900GTX or a 8600 Ultra / GT? Or do you think I should try a ATI card and see if that works for me?!?

Cheers
Tom

Older cards wont improve compatibility with older games. The diagnosis of your problem is incorrect.

I suspect its a simple matter of using compatibility mode.

Well, what I was told by the company that produced the Cossacks game (and they also made American Conquest) was that the GeForce drivers for the 8 series dose not support the game.. therefore I am thinking of getting another card. I know for sure that I can not run it with the card I have right now.. if you think there might be another way to sort this out I am open for suggestions!

Compatibility is not improved by downgrading gfx cards. Your problem is a software problem, not a hardware one.

edit: i think the problem is with drivers after 158.22 , use the one before that.

I tried using the drivers that come with the card, not sure which version it is but on my properties card is says Driver Version 6.14.11.102.. also, looking at the nVidias site I can't find any drivers before the 158.22.. if you could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated! :o

Have you tried -

The latest drivers.
Another OS.
Setting 'processor affinity' to only one core for the program (done in the task manager in 2000, XP or Vista)
Running in an older operating system's compatibility mode (right click the program icon, properties, check the 'run in compatibility mode' box and select an OS from the drop down box).

Although, a 7900 GTX wouldn't be a downgrade from the 8600 GTS. :p

Have you tried -

The latest drivers. ~ Yes, did not work.
Another OS. ~ Uhmm no, I would rather keep my XP
Setting 'processor affinity' to only one core for the program (done in the task manager in 2000, XP or Vista) ~ Not tried, but will if the downgrade of drivers wont work

Thanks for the suggestions, as mentioned if the downgradeing of the drivers don't work i will be trying the 'processor affinity' thingy..

I am downloading the 101.02 drivers now and will see if they work or not!

If the 8600gts is clocked it is still decent believe it or not, x1950pro performance or there abouts. Ive no idea about this problem but like people say theres no reason to stick with what you've got if you not happy, x1800xt or anything similar would be fine

3850 would be a nice upgrade

Downloaded the older drivers but that did not work, neither did the 'processor affinity' thingy.. guess its down to two choices.. either get another Graphic card or forget about playing theses games until nVidia gets their act together and make a driver that work!

Any other suggestion would be much appreciated though!

why don't you simply stick old drivers in there is no reason why your 8600 won't run with older drivers.

I installed the oldest drivers I could find that was compatible with my card, version 101.02 drivers, and I could still not run the games.. I am thinking of trying the version 158.16 drivers now and see if they work..

I have a 7900GTO and it is very good with all games I have played except Crysis (where it is just OK), so I guess the 7900GTX is even better with its faster memory.

7900GTX is next best nvidia card after 8800 series. (I suppose there is the 7950GX2 but that is two cards stapled together :))
