Hi guys, I'm looking for a bit of advice about a potential build for a friend- to be used for stationery and graphic design work- PS/AI mainly (potentially also dealing with large files- wedding table plans, custom banners etc).

I haven't really got time to look into everything in too much depth myself at the minute, so a few specific questions:

Quadro/Firepro or Geforce/R Series?
More RAM or Fast RAM?
What SSD/HDD config?

Budget about 1k, don't worry about monitor or peripherals- I know it's not a fortune for a dedicated workstation machine, but she's setting up a new business! If it's worth going another couple of hundred quid for anything in particular then don't be shy- I might chip something in :D

Cheers all.

just an idea

Yeah, I'd seen those- wasn't sure if I could make the money go further building something from scratch though? I suppose something along those lines would be the right ballpark spec.

if you add extra to budget you could improve that build and likely get a better consumer build, however the kit above and the others in the list have been put together for exactly the type of workstation you are after.

When you say 'graphic design', you mean mostly Photoshop and Illustrator right? Because if so, spending on a Quadro is an utter waste of money. There are benefits, but these are mostly outweighed by the extra cost. A Geforce will do fine (the higher the CUDA cores the better), and will allow extra to be spent on stuff that will make a difference.

Thanks, that looks along the lines of what I was thinking. One thing though, I've been talking to her today and the system itself will have to sit on her desk, so she quite fancies a smaller case. Would all the above work with something like this:

Plus, is that mobo any good and will she lose significant photoshop performance dropping from 6 to 4 cores? Not sure if that would be a deal breaker, because it's going to be her first experience of a half decent system anyway. I just want to get the best I can for her- apparently I'm a lot more careful spending someone else's money!

Cheers again.
