Hi all,

I am looking for a laptop preferably for drawing and possibly editing. I dont know a lot about those kind of laptops but I heard that you need good amount of RAM and preferably 4 core CPU. My price range is £800. Also if I would not want to draw like with the mouse what kind of graphic tablet with a good stylus would you recommend.

Any questions just ask.

I have looked around and there are some laptops which have caught my eye. What do you all think about these laptops:
LENOVO Ideapad Y700 15.6"
asus zenbook ux303
ASUS ROG GL552VW

Are there any that you could recommend.

To them I would buy Wacom intuos pro medium

are the LENOVO Ideapad Y700 15.6" and ASUS ROG GL552VW in your 800 price range, if so then both can be great laptops but what are the Specs though? The Zenbook might be a little on the small size, 12inches or so.

The zenbook is 13". I would prefer a 15.6" as I want to use it for drawing. The Lenevo is £1,100 so it is over my price range, however, I will still consider it as it seems quiet good for the price compared to other in the higher price range. The Asus is £900 I believe so the best price but it seems a bit large. I would like something that is quite sleek in its design like the Zenbook. Some people recommended that macbooks but they seem over priced compared to the windows laptops.

It actually doesnt look too bad. Would I be able to upgrade it from 8.1 to windows 10 though? Also it is a 4th generation i7 processor so would that be good enough if I would want to do like 3d work or rendering in the future.

What about a decently spec'd Surface?

Could be slightly underpowered for what you need but you get the benefit of drawing freehand on it.

It is the 6700hq yes. I would like either the laptop or tablet to have enough power to be able to render as well. As im not going to have it for a year so I want it quite decent.

About the y700 the only thing that is really pushing me away from it is the 4 hour battery.

Are there any laptops with also good battery life as like the y700 or y50-70 or the Asus Rog the battery life is like 4 hours. Which isnt that great. Something with like 7 would be great and I believe the Zenbook has that but also it costs like £1300

4 hours isnt that bad, could always order a 2nd battery

I guess so. With some laptops you have to unscrew the bottom the change the battery which would be a hassle. I have seen some laptops with like 7 hour battery life like the Zenbook I believe.

I have done some more digging. And it seems that the XPS15 seems like a good option for the specs, however, it seems that there are a lot of faults with it. Alienware 15 r2 seems also quite good just a bit more expensive. The only problem I heard about that laptop is that it gets quite warm. I am considering the macbooks but for their price the specs seem quite low. Any other recommendations and what do u think of these?

I think 4 hours is pretty standard and not too bad for laptops with "HQ" CPU (actual quad-core) and dedicated GPU. If you want laptop with in the region of 8 hours battery life, then you'd have to look at laptops with the "U" (2 cores 4 threads) lowly clocked CPU (and possibly with no dedicated GPU).

I would like a 7 core CPU as I would like to do renders probably as well. There are a few options but which one is the best hmm.

I'm guessing you mean core i7? I'd still go for the Y50-70. You're getting a solid 4th gen core i7 which will handle the rendering you want to do as well as a GTX 860M with 4GB dedicated graphics, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD and a 15.6" 4K Display 3840x2160 all with in budget. When it comes to using it on the road you could set up some good power management, under clock when power isnt connected etc.

I personally think the 4720HQ in the Y50-70 is just as good as the newer 6700HQ in the Y700 in terms of raw performance, granted the new chips integrated graphics will be better.

Ops I ment to say 4 core CPU. Yeah I would prefer an i7. I see. I can't find this laptop in popular UK shops though. How much better would you say that the Y700 is. What do youi think of the ASUS zenbook UX303. The downside of that laptop is the 13 inch screen. Would the Rog series be an option as well?

Im a huge fan of Lenovo Thinkpads, Ideapads and HP Elitebooks and will always recommend those, especially to people that travel a lot, over any other laptop but its all personal preference. They are normally very solid laptops. Its on sale on the link I posted where 1st mentioned it, not sure about popular UK shops, not sure the last time I ever went in one.

Depends which model of the Y700 that you go for, there is one with an i7 6700HQ for 899 but in my opinion you are getting less for your money than you would be getting for a little less cash with the Y50-70. But then you could always upgrade parts in the Y700 pretty cheap and it will be better than the Y50-70... so its really down to budget.

I want a computer that would last my for minimum 2 years and I don't want it to be too slow. Also it is important for it to have a good screen and good colour range.
