One of my friends is looking to get into either a graphic design or game design course at uni. It has fallen to me to spec him a pc.
Wha kinda specs should i be looking for and a rough price?
He currently has an antec 650w modular, optical drive and a copy of win 7 and a zalman z7

Whats needed:
CPU
RAM
MOBO
HDD
GPU
Keyboard and mouse
Monitor
He's also eying up a tablet from elsewhere.

cpu grunt and ram, if th4e apps hes going to use support CUDA then get a GPU.

Without at least a rough budget I dnot know whether to recommend AMD for cheapness, or sandybridge i7's for sheer power.

games design and graphic design are RAM and CPU intensive more than GPU.. if im correct, anything above an AMD Phenom tbh.. sandybridge would do just because its a similar price.. all depends how many apps he wants open at once

like peps says depends on your price range but i do games design at uni using 3dsmax you want i5 2500k or i7 2600k (i7 is better for multitasking which 3d rendering programs use a lot of) with 4-8gb of ram maybe a 560/570 and if you can afford it a ssd or high rpm hd drive

As the others have said, it depends on your price range. A 2600K with 8gb RAM would be the best in terms of power, but if your friend is on a tighter budget then maybe a Phenom II X6 is the better choice.

Does your friend know what software he would be using?

I thinks his budget is 600 ( cant find my pound key =/ ) Thats excluding the stuff he already has, i would suspect hel be wanting to game on it regardless. He doesnt know what apps he'l be using but hes buying now (uni in sept) so he can game for now.

Im also interested in what people spec because in september 2012 il be off to uni. I've currently been looking at computer science with games devlopment, Design or something with maths. Il somehow convince my parents that maths needs pc power.

Then I would would suggest for your friend to wait for April/May. Bulldozer will be released then and it may be better for graphics design, but no one knows yet. Apparantly we'll get some benchmarks sometime later this month.

This should also give your friend a chance to save up a bit more as well for a more future proof system.

I dont think hel spend any more even if he did save up. He'l probably buy his 10th guitar the boy is nuts about guitars =/

Il try to convince him to wait tho :)

You could get the OEM 2500k to save a couple of £ as I've put in an after market cooler, but I'd prefer the extra 2 yr warranty myself.

Is about the best I can do....

Maybe an AMD system would be better for him, really depends on how intensive his photo-editing will be....

It would appear he also now has a HDD in exchange for taking me to tescos or mcdonalds during school lunch :D
So he needs:
MOBO
CPU
GPU
Monitor ( i was thinking of a 22" with hdmi for his xbox)
