Graphic problem, pretty stuck!

This is a problem over a long period of time, so i'll try to keep it short

But while playing games such as Tropico 3 / Sins Of a Solar Empire / "Possibly" Rift. (Rift turns black on occasion, but doesn't seem to be related & hasn't happened since i updated drivers 2 days ago.)

I can play the game for 5-10minutes, perfectly fine... brilliant, smooth, no problems.... Then the screen goes black but leaves my cursor on screen. After roughly 7-10 seconds the game resumes... 5minutes later, it repeats and ultimately (over about 30mins) starts doing it every minute or so.

I had this problem 6 months ago, but wasn't bothered about it as it was problem a driver issue etc, so I left it and didn't use the computer for quite awhile.

Now i'm back to the PC and well, I can't fix it!

I've updated graphics drivers, I've updated windows 7, Updated the BIOS (2101) the computer is pretty much a fresh format - 6 months ago, but only has Chrome / Drivers / 4 Games installed & Avast.

I resorted to running Furmark, which runs fine windowed but in full screen (1680x1050) after about 15 minutes I get:

"The NVIDIA OpenGL driver lost connection with the display
driver and is unable to continue. The application must close" - Error Code 8

And very difficult issue which I think could be related, I had a 8800GTX a year+ ago, which started making humming type noises out of no where (not from the speaker indicating an error, seemed to be from the card itself)... Well, that card died so i replaced it with the 260GTX.... Which is also making strange sounds depending on what's happening on screen, most of the time its quiet but then something "happens" graphically and it makes the sound i different tones then stops again, its like its humming to itself.

Also a note on that sound thing, the fans all on the system seem fine, I've ran them all at different speeds / disconnected them etc they're all running like clock work no matter what speeds there running - no humming or squeaking.

OS: Windows 7 (64-bit)
Processor Q6600
Graphics: Nvidia 260GTX
Motherboard: Asus P5Q-E (Although, Asus software for the motherboard refuses to run, despite the logo on the motherboard & splash screen on startup)
RAM: 8GB (OCZ)
Sound: Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty

Everythings running stock, and has never been overclocked.

I fear more hardware may be dying, this system feels cursed (3 graphics cards, 1 CPU, 2 Motherboards, 1 set of ram - in 3 years) but I'd like to see if anyone else has any advice, googling offered almost no advice unless it was photoshop related (which it isn't.)

sounds like either an overheating problem or a power supply problem.

what temperatures were the cards at when you were getting the errors, what power supply do you have ad how old is it?

The power supply is about 3 years old i think, But last year it was sent to OCZ as i believed there may have been a problem with it & it came back all clear (mobo was the problem)

it's a 600w OCZ Silent... something.

Right now I'm running Furmark on extreme burn-in, current GPU temperature is 90c, and holding.

With all those component faliures I'd be looking suspiciously at the PSU.

Hmm, fair point... shame I don't have a spare laying around to test it, not a particularly cheap part either!

That said, I've been toying with the idea of building a new PC recently, maybe I'll buy a new PSU as a starting point as they generally don't go out of date as fast.

Well i've been playing around with it today, done some more furmarks and the graphics card can be on extreme burn-in for 1 hour, 90c maximum temperature... no problems, and no strange sound from the card.

Turn on "Dynamic Camera" and it'll fall over within 10-15minutes, plus make the aforementioned "humming" from start to finish

Eventually window's started becoming unstable, refusing to boot etc without stalling/crashing

So, I've removed some ram & the system has become stable again.
If no-one has any other idea's, i'll throw the graphics card in my friends rig on friday & see if it still falls over.
