Graphic tweaking question.

I've just got a Saphire HD 7970 installed & have MS Flight Simulator 2004. I want to tweak settings to get it running smoothly - is there a tutorial available for using the Catalyst Control Centre & all the settings & options available in it? I've no idea what most of the terms mean.

For instance I'm not sure if I should edit desktop or video colour for the game or a combination of both or how to get rid of shimmer, etc?
Thanks.
Terry.

Don't mind this guy above, he's clearly woken up on the wrong side of the bed.

When you say 'running smoothly', I assume it isn't a framerate issue considering you've got a really powerful gpu in your machine? If it is then we can help identify why it's running choppily (hopefully!) Ideally you'll want to be running 60fps constantly for a truly smooth experience.

If you could perhaps take a screenshot, tell us your monitor model people might be able to help you get rid of any undesirable effects such as shimmer; although I'd probably be led to believe it's more a graphical setting in-game that is causing whatever visual effect you dislike!

The more info the better!

Hello Ritsuamesh. Thanks for your reply. I'm not new to flight sim - just this high powered graphics thing, by the way. I though it would be easy to tweak! I hope I've not written too much....

I've got MS Flight Simulator 2004 in 2 computers, & also in a laptop with XP.
The XP laptop has a nvidia graphics card & I see window glazing bars 'flashing' & no amount of editing settings eliminates it.

Computer 1 that I make my airfields with has ATI Radeon HD 4880 graphics & although window glazing bars 'flash' slightly & I'm happy to live with it.

Computer 2 (the new one) had glazing bar 'flashing' which was very bad with the GTX590 & whatever settings I edited I couldn't eliminate it.
Because the 'flashing' I got with the GTX590 was unacceptable I've had a Sapphire 21197-00-40G HD 7970 Graphics Card (3GB, GDDR5, DVI-I to VGA Converter) installed. However, I'm have great difficulty finding out what settings to edit through the Catalyst Control Centre. There was no tutorial with the graphics card & I can't find anything on line to help. So - my question is what settings do I change?

I don't know what all the settings are for which is one problem.
Do I change the desktop settings or gaming or video settings make FS2004 brighter, eg?

For FS2004 frame rates are unlocked & drop to 20 or so. I have trilinear filtering, MIP map 4 Hardware renderd lights 7. Anti-alias On (turing it off makes the flashing & the whole scenery worse.
I hope this helps.? When I work our how to upload a screenshot I'll do it.
Terry.

FS2004 ran fine with me with an 8800GTX on highest settings.

Can i ask, why are you using an 8 year old flight sim when 2 new versions are already out? :)

All nvidia graphics I've ever had have had problems rendering window glazing bars regardless of high settings. Frame rates , etc are one thing, smoothness is another.
ATI graphics have always been smoother.....

I use GoldenWings3 which uses FS2004, & I make WW2 airfields & they don't fit into FSX. Also - I like it........What's the other new sim?

don't know if it's the case for fs2004,, but with FSX, nvidia is preferred by the game
