Graphical Corruption on 7900GS

Was wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar - My Geforce 7900GS has recently started producing graphical corruption in Direct3D. I have mainly noticed this in Civilization 4, where I get distorted polygons, jutting out from one or two places - not always the same places and it doesn't always happen. Anyway, today the situation was much worse, with flashing green frames occasionally popping up during the game. These disappeared when I dropped back to the desktop (for a moment, I thought my brand spanking new Hazro HZ24Wi was going wrong). I thought it may be overheating due to dust so I have taken it out and thoroughly cleaned it and this seems to have solved the problem (for the moment). Just wondered if anyone else has experienced something similar and whether overheating can cause this problem or whether I should order a new graphics card before this card goes the way of the dodo!

For info, I am running the latest catalyst drivers and my main specs are Athlon 64X2 4200+ on a Gigabyte mobo with Geforce4 SLI chipset.

+1 :eek::eek:

Surely thats a typo.... I sure hope so anyway lol

If not then you need the nvidia drivers NOT the ATI Catalyst drivers....

Yeah, okay I wasn't concentrating. Used to have a Radeon 9700 so I guess got confused! Obviously using the latest Nvidia drivers....

What Temperature is the card running at? I used to experience similar effects on my old 7900gs when the card was running overly hot...

79 series nvidia cards are extremly failure prone. your card has died the normal death the 79 series suffers from.
if its under warranty do an rma. if not then time for a new card.

I had this exact same problem with my 7900GS and I'm almost certain that it's heat related. In the end it got so bad (computer locking up after showing those graphic glitches for a couple up minutes) that I bought another graphics card (ATI HD 3850) to keep me going until early next year when I'm building a new system.

When I took out the 7900GS I noticed that a lot of dust had built up around the fan, so I think that a good clean out (like you did) might have been enough to keep it going for another couple of months... live and learn.
