Quick advice needed

I'm looking for an upgrade to my graphics card, not changing my 1280x1024 sony monitor. I want to get the best graphics possible at this resolution.
I don't think there is any point in going to the latest and greatest card, as it would seem that this is a waste of money at this resolution.

What would you people recommend?

I don't want to go too much off topic, so I will suggest the ATi X1950 cards at the moment. For around £200 they offer great performance for the price. However, I just need to say why is the latest gen pointless at 1280x1024? Imo it will allow you to run all the eye-candy on any game and have the best IQ currently available. ;) However, if you wish to wait a bit longer then like stated, the X1950 cards seem very good value. :D

For 1280x1024 gaming I would say a Core 2 Duo E6300 + 2GB DDR2 + X1950Pro setup would be ideal. :) I game in 1440x900 (slightly smaller than 1280x1024) on my system, and to be honest I think my hardware is slightly overkill for the resolution I play at.

Yes you would, x1950pro is perfectly fine for 1280x1024, and will last ages yet. :)
Like the man said, I think an X1950XT-X would be a waste. Even the cheapest X1950Pro cards are extremely capable in all the latest titles and probably will be for a long time to come, especially when you keep in mind that DX10 is going to take forever to mature just like SM3 did.

Just about convinced me to go for the X1950pro.

Thanks a lot

So not really worth the extra 75 quid for the the XTX then?
IMO no, like LoadsaMoney said you can get an 8800GTS for that, but I would be looking at the X1950Pro before anything else simply because it's so capable at that resolution and the price is amazing.

Edit: Everyone is ninja editing on me. :p

ii agree with above. at the res you runnning same as mine x1950 pro is a top choice at a cheap price. im running my games at maximum details with a 256 pro. nad its coping easily. you can get a 512mb version for 150 i think in sale this week and a 256mb for 125.

It really depends on how long you plan on keeping the card for.

I currently game at the same resolution and have a x1900xtx. It runs most games very well but can struggle if you turn AA and AF right up. I'm not sure how the x1950 pro compares to the x1900xtx.

It you are planning on keeping the card for more than a year I would recommend the 8800 GTS.

There should be some very GPU stresfull games coming out over the next year or so and I am not sure the x1950pro will be able to cut it on max detail plus AA and AF. The added bonus of the 8800 is that it is dx 10 compliant.

However if you are looking for a card to keep for around six months until the next refresh of graphics cards then the x1950 pro will be a very good buy especially at the current prices.

Really? That's a little odd because my X1900XT (even at stock) chews through everything I throw at it. Are you using a resolution much higher than 1440x900?

The X1950Pro is about equal to an X1800XT performance-wise, and when I had an X1800XT it was almost maxing everything out at 1280x960. An X1950Pro would easily last two years in my opinion, three if you're okay with low settings.

I am on 1280x1024 same as the OP.

Have you tried Oblivion with all details turned up and forced 6x AA and 16AF with HDR. My card certianly doesnt run that well. I do only have a fx55 as a processor though so in some games this may bottleneck the card.

When you say it chews through everything what kind of framerates are we talking about? By stuggle I mean that the minimum framerate dips into the 20's for short periods.

I agree if you are OK with low settings it will last you a few years, however, the OP said he wanted the best graphics possible at the resolution. The x1950pro will not provide this for very long.

If he is looking for a card that will enable him to run at max detail and turn AA and AF on high for more than a year then I would go for the 8800 GTS. Its current price is not too high. Although no where near as good as the x1950pro.

Aye I was running Oblivion maxed (without shadows) in 1280x960 with HDR, AA and AF on my X1800XT and 3400+ @ 2.75Ghz, I took quite a few screenshots with FPS displayed and some Fraps stats too.

Obviously, being Oblivion, it did drop below 20 sometimes but it took a pretty intense scene. This was with all the texture and tiling mods too.

On my X1900XT it runs maxed, obviously with a higher framerate than my X1800XT, but I've also gone Core 2 Duo since which really boosted my framerate in that particular game. :D

Yeah same here, Oblivion maxed in 1280x1024 (TFT) , 2xAA/16x HQ AF+HDR runs very nice on my x1800 XT 512mb. :)

x1950pro runs it pretty well also due to having 36x shaders as you can see here , it really is an amazing card for the price, so if your want to keep your spend to around that level then it is the one to go for, but as i said i wouldn't touch the x1950 XTX, not when the new gen 8800 GTS is cheaper than it, so if your thinking of spending that much then the GTS is the one to go for over the XTX. :)

how does the x1950pro compare to the 7950gt? i was thinking of getting the 7950gt but costs around £40 dearer and if it's similar performance then i may consider the x1950pro.
