As some will have seen I've posted in several areas as I spec and build my new rig.

I currently have 7950GT in my system and was wondering if I'm best replacing it with one of the 8000 series ?

Again my rig will be a quad core with 4GB ram.. any suggested cards ?

I dont plan on doing any hardcore gaming.. some COD4 and Doom3 on full would be nice !

ceap it its still good card should play cod4 kk depends what resolution you using and should handle doom3 easily depends what will be your cpu and ect...

It can, but I'd stick with what you have and upgrade after the next gen. nvidia in Feb/March 08. By that I don't mean you should get a top card but all other card prices should have settled down by then. Still can't get 8800gt's and 3870's for the price they should be!!

If COD4 and max quake is what you want, my 3800x2 rig with 2gb and x1950 512 does Doom maxed and COD 4 at mid/high at around 40-50 most the time...its a VERY well coded game :). Your GT should be fine mate

I just upgraded to a 8800GT coming from a Gainward 7950GT GS 256MB. If you are going to game on a resolution like 1680x1050 then you can't play with all settings on high, maybe Doom 3 but not COD4 on a 7950GT, well maybe a bit better on a 512MB version of that card but I wouldn't expect much from it.

Just try it out mate, if it doesn't work for you sell the card while you can still get something for it and go for a 8800 GT / GTS 512mb

I'm in the same boat just bought the OcUK 24" monitor coupled with a X1900XT playing COD it slows a bit at times been looking to upgrade to a 8800GT.

I'm a REAL NOOB with games and don't really understand what the resolution settings in the game itself do, like I have the monitor set to 1920 X something for windows yet when I installed the game it had used settings of 1024 X 768 or something so I adjusted to 1680 X 1050 have I done this right? and what can I di to see if my card can cope?

your 24" has a native resolution of 1920*1200, that IS actually the amount of pixels the your 24" TFT screen HAS. So if you are going to play in 1680x1050 (which is less) then it has to spread 1680x1050pixels over 1920x1200 pixels. This works but will look a bit more "blurry" most of the time. The lower you go from your native resolution the more blurry things will look because of the pixel spreading.

Now to look how your graphics card will cope just run the game in the resolution, if it plays stuttery/slow then it's almost not coping :P:p

I still have my 7900GS and play the below with no problems whatsoever.

COD4 on med/high on 1280X1024
Crysis on medium 1024X768
Timeshift on high settings 1024X768
NFS PS Medium Settings 1024X768

What an excellent summery you have filled all the gaps for me and for once I understand what's happening.

Thank you.:)
