I currently have an Intel Core 2 duo 1.8GHz/1GB DDR2 RAM using an onboard GFX.

I'm interested in upgrading to a DX10 GFX card when they come out, I'm not a huge gamer but will be wanting to play Flight Simulator X which i believe using DX10 technology.

However I only have a budget of about 100-150 pounds. Is it worth waiting for DX10 cards, or just buying the best I can get now for 150 pounds?

You can't game with onboard, and if you want something to tide yourself over for a while, then get the X1800XT from Ocuk at ~ £150. Stunning card for the money.

Price leaks for vista show that the higher specced ones will be about £230+

i think so but tbh £150 for a gc compared to what u have now is very good.

i would bye one now if i was u atleast you can play games now.

You could buy Vista and then save up for a DX10 graphics card later. All early DirectX 10 intended games should support DX9(someone confirm?) so you can use the x1800 until you have enough money for a better then first launched DX10 card.

If the game you wanna buy is DX10/Microsoft then it may be released on Vista only. What the performance would be like with DX9 cards hard to say, you could get something like a 7600 GT, much easier to stomach as a stopgap when it is under £100.

Hmm, how long is a 7600GT likely to last me? If I buy a card now then I won't bother with DX10 at all due to the cost, but I'll only buy a card now if it's going to last at least 2-3 years.

Or should I get the x1800XT instead?

hmmm tough to say as no one knows how the 7600gt will run with msf x and windows vista.

Am I going to be the first to say I didn't understand any of what you just said?

A 7600GT, in my mind, is the best choice for someone wanting a temporary upgrade before DX10. At <£100 it is a real bargain. As for running MFS X.. Any card could run it... Just with varied framerates. Depending on your resolution the 7600GT will run it with an acceptable framerate and moderate eye candy. :)

nor me and i wrote it.

what i mean is he wants it to last 2-3 years no one knows in all honesty how long it will keep up for..for a start windows vista aint even out yet so thats one hurdle.

i was chatting to me other half got distracted.

I was joking with the understanding. :p

If the OP wants 2-3 years out of a graphics card then i'd be inclined to say the X1900XT... But if he wants to be running at max in 3 years then theres no chance. I got my 7800GTX last September and it's still holding strong, but give it another couple of months and I'll be setting back the AA and what have you.

You may even want to consider a dual card solution if you don't want to upgrade for 2-3 years.

well i think the price leaks showed an upgrade from XP to the standard vista to be about £100ish, but the 'apparent' one to go for is the expensive one. I don;t have a clue about vista and what it actually does. Plus direcx10 features in games won't be around for at least another year, so whats the point in buying the first cards which will be oo slow to run the features in the lateset games. The X1800xt and x1900xt's are truly cracking cards !!!!! :D

I dont intend to upgrade to Vista for a number of years with any luck (if ever :) ). I dont think any game in the first few years will come out to be DX10 only, as the market base would be very small. As such a good card like the X1800XT & WinXP should last you the next 2 or so years. Nor do i expect the games being released in those first couple of years after DX10 is released to be earth shatteringly different when played in DX10, compared to their DX9 versions, due to games taking many years to develop & the coders coming to a full understanding of how to utilize DX10 to its utmost.

Another vote for the X1800XT.

Agreed with ACESHIGH above i won't touch vista for 12 months afters its release just for the fact i can't see any games being worth the huge outlay of vista and a dx10 card.

By then vista will come down in price and so the next batch of dx 10 cards will be out, another vote for the x1800xt give you a good year or two gaming at high specs as good as the 7600 gt is for £50 more you can get a card thats far superior.

well look at it this way, people are still using gf4ti4200 and 9800pro and they are very old now. the 7600gt will last a long time, all you have to do is drop some details or resolution when it starts to struggle. im planning on sticking to my 7600gt till july 2007 possibly little longer.
