Hey guys my mate at work has asked me if i would like to swap my 8800GT 512MB card and £20 for his gainward GTX 260 896MB. can anyone tell me if this is worth it. thanks

The comparison shows it is an upgrade, but im not sure your mate is been that good to you.
Whats the rest of your system? Might you consider putting in a bit more money for a more modern card?

this is my system is around 6-7 years old now, i have added 4gb of ram and i cant really afford any major upgrades now due to having a family. i use my system for mainly gaming -( world of warcraft,league of legends,football manger)

I assume you play at 1080p resolution. You will see some improvement going from the 8800GT to the 260. I did the same when I was using a Q6700 and it was a reasonable jump. You won't be able to play any modern games with any sort of high/ultra details at reasonable fps though. Even for wow, if you raid, that system will cause fps drop issues unless you turn settings right down.
