Graphics card coolers

Hi,

I was just wondering how you control the fan for an aftermarket GPU cooler, something like a Corsair H55 or NZXT X40 on a Kraken G10.

Does it just run at full pelt all the time?

Thanks

Can't speak for the others, but Accelero coolers plug into the GPU's existing fan header so you can simply set whatever fan curve you want in Afterburner. If the other coolers use standard 3-pin fans, I guess you're looking at connecting them to the motherboard and using Speedfan to control them (if supported) or using separate fan controller on them.

I have a Bitfenix Recon but cant see how it will know how to adjust the fan speed unless I control it manually or stick one the temp probes in there somewhere?

Take my advice and get a good 120mm fan that's very quiet at 12v.

Something like a Noctua or Noiseblocker Eloop. I use a 600 RPM Eloop on mine, both for the GPU and the CPU.

My GPU temps are 48c after two hours of Valley on a GTX 480 Lightning. One of the hottest cores ever produced..

I think you are over analysing this tbh. Just whack on a quiet fan, job done.

Edit. And avoid the H55 the hoses are woefully short. What you want is the NZXT X60? basically it's the same design as the H55, same pump, same rad, longer hoses.

Agree H55 hoses are too short and limit where you can mount the radiator. Alt of the X60 if you have a 140mm fan mount spare go for the NZXT X41. The CAM software that comes with it is pretty good even telling you the liquid temp.

I understand people have been going for the H55 of late as there is still an e-tailer selling the refurb units cheap as I got one.

I used to let corsair link control mine but I got a fan controller on thurs and have both the h55 fans controlled on that. Tbh most games only need them slightly turned on to keep my card under 50c

Thanks, do you mean replace the standard fan that comes with the H55/X41?

I have a spare 140/120mm mounting position available in my case but would need longer hoses so thanks for the heads up

I've noticed Arctic Accelero Extreme's are going cheap elsewhere at the moment but they look a pain to install and are huge, plus I think I would prefer the heat outside of the case

The latest Accelero Extreme models are really easy to fit (single, large heatsink on the back) where the earlier ones took a lot longer (glued on heatsinks). The only downside is that it ends up covering the PCI slot above the GPU as well as the two below. Fantastically quiet coolers though (had one on a 7970 before switching to the Accelero Hybrid II's for my 290s).

Cheapest way would surely be something like Speedfan - plug the fan into the mobo header and link that fan header to GPU temp, then just alter that fan profile to suit how you want it to cool.

I do something similar, all be it not for an AIO cooler, I have a case fan that points at the GPU, that fan is linked to GPU temp via Speedfan so that it ramps up and down accordingly with GPU load/temp.

I cant decide what to do -

Wait for the 390X and put up with the noise of the 290X for a couple more months

Keep the 290X, swap out the cooler and get a new monitor

Sell the 290X and put £150 toward a 290X 8GB with a better cooler and get a new monitor a month or so later

I'm currently gaming at 1080P and really want a higher resolution but if I get a 390X first it will take me a fair bit longer to save and get a new monitor which means the 390X will be a bit wasted for a while, also I only paid £175 for my 290X so swapping the cooler out isnt that big a deal

What would you guys do?

What 290x do you have for the noise to be so unbearable!?

IF I had to pick an option and the was that bad then grab the aio and pop it on there. Only going to cost you an extra £50 still less than a new 290x. Then sell when the 390x comes out.

Its a reference card, its great but the noise gets on my nerves sometimes and the rest of my system is quiet so its letting it down

AIO solution is £20 for the GPU adapter and then about £70 for the AIO itself so its going to set me back £90ish all in

That makes sense then.

£70!? I picked my H55 up for £35! I'd sell it and get a non reference card for an extra £100. Mine is near enough silent, it only starts to become a little noisy after a couple of hours of gaming

NZXT X41 is £70, H55 on here is £55

There is still the option of the Accelero I've seen for £45 but dont want the heat in the case as my CPU cooler intakes from above the GPU and it affects my CPU temps

If I sold my 290X for £150 I would need to put £180 toward a Saphire Tri-X 8GB

Deciding what to do is a pain!

Ah right. What about MM someone in there might have one cheap?

Why do you want the 8gb model? You're only at 1080p aren't you? I doubt you'll be seeing more than 4gb being used. And what about the MSI? That's £250.
