Graphics Card Cooling

From reading reviews it seems as long as you have decent airflow in your case it should be alright running passive.

Though obviously a fan wouldn't hurt, especially if you're OCing.

Ooo one last question, I know you said the Zalman is almost silent how about the HR with a 92mm fan?
Will it be as quiet as the Zalman?

Have a look at some 92mm fans to see what dB they give off, anything under 18dB is meant to be "silent" - I think the Zalman VF900 is rated at 18.5dB (in silent mode).

Tig you do realise that all your PCI slots will be blocked by that HR03?

I can't stress just how much better off you'd be with a zalman. Instead of taking up 5 slots it just takes up 2. The zalman is also silent and easy to install.

I understand I'd be losing quite a bit of space but I was hoping I'd be able to place the HR on top instead of underneath, besides, I only use one of my PCI slots anyway.

I must admit though the Zalman looks much easier to install.

At the moment I've installed ATI Tray and increased my fan speed and at idle my GPU temp is currently 38-40degrees but is really loud. All I want is my graphics card to be kept at a similar temp (or less if possible) but while keeping quiet.

If the Zalman can do that 100% then that's the way to go I'm sure.

If you don't need the space, then the HR-03 is the one to go for. As for fitting, I've fitted VF900CU's to the two 7900GTs I had, and I've fitted a HR-03 PLUS to my 8800GTX, and I think that the HR-03 PLUS was definitely a more secure fitting - and it was only slightly more complicated to fit.

After getting my tape measure out I don't think the HR will fit so it's down to the Zalman it seems but from this review the Zalman looks to be very hot at full load and in another review on tomshardware the Zalman is given the lowest score of several coolors.
They recommended the AC Accellero X2 over it.

I'm really not sure, I don't want to replace my stock cooler on my X1800XT without the new cooler being much cooler at idle and load whilst remaining almost silent.

Can somebody please just put my mind to rest concerning this?

I was also slightly worried about the fact that the after-market coolers don't dissipate the hot air out through the back of the case like the stock cooler does, is this a problem?

I can tell you that even with my 7900GS voltmodded from 1.2/2.0 to 1.4/2.2 and overclocked to 650/840 my Zalman never let the temps go over 45C while sress testing in ATiTool (down from 75C with stock cooler). And at medium fan settings it is inaudible.

If your case has any kind of decent airflow then it will be fine.

hr-03 is the one to go for, hot card like yours can be cooled down well. and with it being summer time your gonna end up with overheat if you dont; get a good cooler on a hot card like yours.

I would go for the HR but I've measured the gaps between my PCI/CPUFAN/GPU and there's not really enough room either way.

Thanks for the vote of confidence for the Zalman, I think I'll nab that one and hope that it does the job while keeping quiet.

Okay guys I've just recieved the Zalman VF900CU but I just wanted to check on something.

As I've already mentioned I have ATI Tray installed, should I uninstall it before I install the new cooler? The Zalman obviously runs differently to the stock cooler and it comes with its own speed controller (Fan Mate 2) so I'm not sure what to do.

Would it be best to uninstall ATI Tray, then install the VF900CU so that it loads up into its default speed settings, then reinstall ATI Tray or wont there be any need for ATI Tray? I only use ATI Tray to change the fan speeds of my stock cooler, nothing else.

Also, the fan needs to be plugged into a motherboard fan slot, I'm assuming this is the Sys_FAN slot? My system fans (front and rear) and plugged into the PSU connectors via an adapter by the way.

Thanks in advance!

Josh
