Graphics card dead?

My computer shut down with a burning smell the other week and after a few tests it looks as though it is the graphics card. Can not confirm this.

Anyone have any ideas as to what this could be? Could it be fixed?

Might sell as faulty but if I can't get much for it I would just take it apart for the fun of it and see if I could fix it myself.

Thanks

Power supply powers up though when I take out the graphics card. Fans all kick in. I can't see the screen though because I don't have a VGA cable to connect to the monitor. Got one now but I am at work.

I am not sure what is wrong with it now. Just found out I have no onboard graphics and no spare graphics card.

Would the system power up, lights, fans and stuff if the PS was at fault?

I am getting no beeps when it comes on. Just no screen because I dont have a graphics card. I can plug the graphics card in, but as soon as I plug in the power for the graphics the computer cuts out.

Faulty graphics card or PS?

I need help desperately as I dont want to buy a PS or graphics card and then find out it was something else

have you tried leaving your computer on with no picture for a long period of time to see if it cuts out itself without the graphics card? If it did then that is probably the psu, but if it is only happening with your gpu I would think there may be a fault or maybe your card is overheating for some reason. does the pc come back on straight away after it cuts out? or does it stay off?

It stays off. I have a REALLY old graphics card but not sure that works either lol I put that in and the fans come on but still no picture.

When I plug in the graphics card the computer only goes off when I put the power into the GPU.

Once the computer shuts down I have to reset on MB or unplug to get it working again.

And the only way it comes back on is if I unplug the GPU.

sounds to me like your psu either isn't strong enough for the card in watts or your psu is dying and just can't handle the card anymore.

or it could be a dead PCIE slot. do you have multiple slots? try putting it in another.

Keyboard lights flash when I power on. That is normally I good sign for the MB isn't it?

The silence is something that is strange though. Shouldn't it beep or something?

PSU is 700Watts. My mate has a spare graphics card which he is going to lend me. I hope it isn't the PSU as I took the Graphics card to bits to see if it was damaged in anyway.

If it was a dead pcie slot would the fans kick in on the older graphics card?

yeah i think it should beep. I would reset the bios just take out the battery for a min. In i would remove the ram and start the pc with no ram at all to see if it beeps. If not sounds like your psu. I've had 2 die on me and they did boot the pc but screen would freeze etc.

not if it was completely dead but maybe if it was faulty.

Thanks for your input. I will try my mates graphics card tomorrow and hope that works but I am beginning to think it is the motherboard or psu or both.

Definitely can't test the motherboard if the graphics card doesn't work. This is getting expensive.

What motherboard is it?? if the manual says it will beep then its your board or psu.. if the manual was to say it will not been without ram/gpu etc ie it don't give a warning its your psu/gpu lol.

I wish I keep my last computer now instead of selling the bits. It would have made it a lot easier trying to work out which part/parts are at fault.

Hopefully i can pick up something from MM

Looks like it was the graphics card, as I borrowed a mates Graphics card and it booted up past the post. Might have done something to my hard drive too. This came up with an error on loading but when I tried fixing with the windows disk it kept looping trying to fix it. Its missing a file but I cant remember which file. A SYS file of some kind.

So I will probably try and reinstall a fresh copy over and see if that works. I was planning on getting a new hard drive for the OS but couldnt be bothered to reinstall everything.

Looks like the faulty card will be going on the bay, could be a bargain for someone who knows a little more about graphics cards than me.
