Graphics Card Dead?

Hey guys,

Some of you may have noticed not so long ago that I was asking about Graphics Cards ideas for a Christmas present...well it seems my old one has now started kicking up a fuss (protest? :p).

Anyway, currently my card is making this noise:

Obviously that isn't good! But, I was wondering if there was a quick-fix I could do just to get it ticking along just for a few more days until I can get the funds together for a new one?

It sounds as if it could be the fan bearings but I can't be sure. I took the card out and gave it a good ol' clean just to make sure it wasn't clogged with dust, put it back in and the same thing happened (I try to clean my computer as much as possible as the graphics card itself does get a lot of heavy use with rendering etc).

It's an old ATI HD3450 so it's had a couple of years use....and at £30 I guess I can't complain!

Any suggestions please? :)

Cheers,

KugarWeb.

Done! Strange, that privacy setting never seems to work. You set it to private so only people with the link can view it and then it doesn't do it lol

Oh well, should be working now :)

Stulid it won't run without the fan mate, them cards have a bad habit of melting the fan in the end and in some cases the fan falls right off, he's at the stage where the fan is deformed or about to fall off, that is why he is getting the rattle. The best thing to do is take the fan off the card but keep the heatsink in place and try find a small fan and tie wrap it into place and power it from one of the spare molex connectors off the PSU. I have had to mod cards like that before in companies that had them cards and got upset with the noise or worse the fan fell off and the system locks up because the GPU gets too warm.

working now, the cheapest solution I can think of is to disconnect the fan power on the card and stick something like this underneath - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SY-000-AN&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=399 - the card may even be fine running passive with just the heatsink it has attached to it without a fan.

Interesting. I don't know if you can quite see in that video but there is a 120mm fan to the left (exhaust fan) of the blue glowing one. Would that be enough to keep it cool for the time-being if i disconnected the one on the card? I'm guessing not but worth a try lol.

I may be able to get a new card ordered up tomorrow anyway, just need to make a decision on it really lol. Wasn't expecting Christmas to come so early :/

Thanks for the help mate, much appreciated!

Oh lol. Is that a part I could get on the average high street? I have one very small computer shop which mainly only sells cards, screens or builds, not much in the way of components...and of course the big ones.

You will want an electrical components place, Google "Brushless 12Vdc Axial Fans" then click shopping link in google you will see the name of the place I mean (we can't mention other companies names here that sell pc stuff too). It is the place selling the fan for £6.99 and starts with M and ends with S. If you have one of them near you they may have a fan that you can use, maybe just cutting off the cable of the old fan and wiring it to the new fan. Best to take the old fan off 1st and read the back it will tell you the voltage it uses and i'm sure they should have something in there you can use to even tie wrap it on, you probably wont get a fan that fits exactly so you will have to mod it a little.

I would get a fan about the same size as the other one if not a little bigger and rest it blowing down onto the heatsink and then tie wrap it all way round the card to hold it in place.

They do sell small fans here too, just measure the original fan to make sure.

Ah whoops lol. That's fair enough :).

Okay cool, will have a look into those, thanks for the links. Will no doubt be going for one of the nvidias I was recommended before anyway but as a quick fix that's perfect! :)

Yes as a quick fix it's more then fine and will probably out live the card and next failure will be something you can't fix so easily. Nothing wrong with keeping an old card running, even if it is later used as a spare for troubleshooting a system.
