A friend of mine has struggled on for years with a first gen i7, I donated pretty much a full i9 10980XE setup to boost him a little, he is actually using da Vinci with his current setup. He has started a new job and will have some money he can inject into the setup, I have had to temper his expectations on of number of NVME drives he can have and if possible get PCIe gen 3, he was going to go latest gen.

He has been looking at an RTX 5070 as the graphics card, I get the feeling this would be bottle necked by the CPU and RAM 96gb 2400Mhz. he definitely wants to go Nvidia for other uses, what would suit this system the best for his usage? Budget is as low as possible.

What resolution does he play games at? Although it will prove to be slower than say a 5800x3d I’m sure it’s still capable of providing a good experience at 1440p+ though the minimums may suffer a bit. But it should still do OK? PCIE 3.0 won’t be a problem either for a 5070.

I run a 4090 on a i9 7980XE and it only slightly bottle necks the card at 4K resolutions. Also X299 has quad memory channels, so that 2400Mhz RAM is effectively giving twice the bandwidth of a similar 2 channel mainstream CPU configuration assuming 4 Memory slots are used. So really it does depend on the resolution he uses.
