Ok i need a £150 graphics card PCI-E to last me till september next year when i will get a dx10 card. i will be gaming at 1280x1024 and mostly RTS's and online FPS's, was looking at the 7900 but it sucks for oblivion, was thinking about getting a second hand X1900xt or x1800xt or soemthing like that. it will be going with a E6300 and 2gb of 6400 ram.

any suggestions?

i use a sapphire 1950pro and play dods and cs:s online at 1280x1024. with all details maxed and hdr off (dont like it) i get 100fps + in both them games and cs:s easily is 150fps oor more at times. i ended setting a fps limit to 100 in me cfg.

how would it run company of hero's and medieveal 2: total war?

and would a 7900GS 512mb be better or not?

why set an fps cap? wouldnt it be good at 100+ lol

i set an fps cap to even it out just prefer to keep fps *** same if can. as for company of heroes i have that aswell and i run that at every thing maxed apart from 2 things wich are on high instead of uiltimate and on character detail i got it 1 notch from full and it runs smoooooth.

i also have medievla war 2 i have that on all max gfx seems fine so far but have only played the game a little so far.

dont know how much cpu effects these games.

can anyone tell me how good a X1800XT 512mb is? ive heard this will easily last my till september.

Its quick. It has a slower core than the 1950 Pro, and older technology, but has more pipes and shaders and is as quicker / quicker in some tests.

Really depends on what games you play, if you play a lot of Nvidia based games go for 7900 series. If you play bit of everything ive found ATI to be more stable and cope with things a lot better...for you price id highly recommend the x1900 pro, it will rip through 99.9% of games out at the moment.

bingo, just the thread i'm after :D

i'm building a new system, and hoping to spend under £200 on a graphics card, as i dont really want to spend more than £200 on any component.

how much more "real world" power would i see from buying an X1950XT over an X1950 Pro

i dont particularly care about benchmark scores, just after good quality images in games.

and will the cheaper X1950Pro be likely to last me all of next year?

I wouldn't have thought there would be much difference between a 1950 Pro and a x1950xt in terms of image quality. You'll get more fps with the later, and certainly consider the x1950xt 512MB at higher resolutions (1600 x 1200, etc...). But at 1280 x 1024 you can't go wrong with the x1950 Pro, especially that powercolour one with the upgraded cooler.

Cracking had mine since last November, cuts through everything maxed out at 1280x1024, don't know how long its got left at that res though, id probably go for the HIS x1950 XT now as thats now only £199, and before anyone crys, thats with the VAT added. :D
