Graphics card for 2560 X 1440 monitor

I've just got one of the new Hazro 27 inch monitors (not looked at it yet, but it's waiting for me). I currently have an old Dell Precision 390 with E6400 processor and GTX 260 graphics card (PSU swapped for 700W model). Sometime soon, I'll need to replace the whole system (with this Dell even a motherboard upgrade is not possible since it's BTX). I've been thinking of either the Radeon 6970 or GTX 570 just to keep my current performane levels at the higer resolution (current monitor is only 1280 X 1024). I'm not too sure if the Radeons work well with FSX yet. The other thing is I want to keep the power low. Another possibility is getting a GTX 560 Ti with a view to maybe adding another at a later date when I replace the rest of the system. At most it will only be used for a bit of casual gaming and HD movies, the rest being static stuff. Any advice appreciated.

i ordered the same monitor as you, and a single msi 6970 (got mine for only £240), looking at benchmarks it should be ok for 90% of current games.

at higher res. the 6970 kicks some series ass! only about 5% away from a 580 :) and about 10% better than 570 - at 2560x1440 res. only - before someone jumps in and correct me...

my thread - same question, with lots of info and input:

6950 / 70 2gb // 580 3gb // 560 2gb / sli.

All depends upon how much you demand, high levels of AA, textures etc.

Precisely. It's probably not something anyone can help with but I though somebody might throw something into the pot that might sway me one way or another. I'm guessing that with the very high pixel density I can probably get away with a lower AA setting anyway. I'm wondering if I would actually notice the difference between an OC 560 Ti at 900 and a 570.

I have a screen with that res and GTX580 is sort of capable of driving it, but I have to lower the settings of some games here and there. All depends what kind of stuff you are playing, but a single GTX560 will not be enough to max out all modern games. Two in SLi - maybe.

... read the thread i linked you, there r some links to reviews in there which compares gfx cards at excatly what u r looking for! and yeah they compared them with AA enabled.

Currently my processor is likely to be the bottleneck. The 6970 does seem to have the edge in most games at high resolution. Anyone know if FSX still nakes a hit with the new Radeons?

I like everything maxed out though I have some degree of tolerance for AA levels (I'm usually quite happy with 4xAA, does depend on the game though / implementation is crucial e.g. Stalker COP, perhaps because it's modded atm, but when I unleash loads of AA you don't imo really see a great benefit).

Therefore if this were myself and bearing in mind the above points I'd be looking at either two 560's 2gb in sli (Gainward Phantom), or two 580's 3gb in sli. I don't think my 480 would manage to meet my expectations with 1.5gb of vram.

If you're not bothered about AA then a couple of 470's (overclocked) / 570's or 480's should be fine. Of course, the two 6950's are the great 'universal' option atm, be it high or very high res. I'd love to have three of them! :D

FSX still prefers Nvidia cards. I would personally get a GTX580 3gb or a 2gb 560 and SLI it later once you have a new processor etc...

It does look like the 6970 has the edge at high resolutions. I'll have to hope that Microsoft Flight is more ATI friendly.

You don't need more than 1GB vRAM for most games at this resolution (unless you use some stupid amounts of AA).

Trust me on this one, I made a move from a heavily clocked 5850 1GB to a stock 6950 2GB and gaming at this resolution, the difference is minimal. In fact, I am experiencing some problems that haven't occurred before.

With that said, the 6950 2GB is an excellent card at £200 mark. You would have to invest some £260-280 in Crossfire 6870s to really beat it or £200-240 in Crossfire 5850s. You could also try a GTX570 for £240.

I've tried the monitor out on the GTX 260 and surprised that some old and less demanding games run smoothly. The only problem is that it does not detect the HDCP status so I can't play Blu-rays. I think this is a general problem with Nvidia and the Hazro monitors, so it looks like I'll be going with the Radeon.

My EVGA GTX 570 copes fine at 2560x1440 in BF3. I have set AA to 0 and AF to 8 otherwise it struggles

Just had an epic game on Caspian :)

Finished now though. Boooo
