My current card has given up it's ghost and I don't fancy forking loads for a new card as it will not be used heavily for games - but it needs to be able to do 720p with any probs.

I had the X1600 in mind as I read somewhere this shoud cope - but would like your opinions.

any card will be able to do this, whether cutting edge or several years old, 720p is simply 1280x720 on a pc, all images output from a pc are progressive

I thought that HD required something with at least a little grunt?

You may be thinking of the processor power required to decode HD material, which will need a reasonable processor although nothing too exotic, unless you plan to do a lot of post processing with FFDShow or something similar.

The system is reasonable, I've got an Opty 146 with 2GB of RAM. I want to enjoy 720p with no stuttering and to be honest am not really bothered about gaming speed as I will probably buy a 360 soon.

Not too clued about post-processing - does this help with HD or DVD material? (I've got a Panny LCD.)

What do people here think about AVIVO (or the nVidia equivalent) - does it help with HDTV?

Many thanks :)

That system will be fine, you don't NEED to do post processing but it can sharpen up quality.

If it was me I'd go with ATi as they apparently have slightly better pic quality but the difference will be minute
