Cards are backwards compatible
As already mentioned
Though with older motherboards the bios
Can actually be an issue
If you try to use too new a gpu
Had it years ago when I tried to go from
A 970 to a 1070 the bios couldn't support the 1070
Forgot which motherboard
A burning smells obviously not good news though
Something like a capacitor you could
Probably replace yourself
But anything else is probably beyond the average person
Though theres people in here who can
Do pcb level repairs though probably not financially viable
On a 980
