Hello all

Seeing as I've been out of the game for some time, I'm not sure whats good and whats bad any more concerning graphics cards so figured I'd ask here :)

I have a friend who wants to buy a cheaphish card for his PC to run Skyrim, I believe his PC specs are reasonably decent except for the graphics card currently....

He's linked me to a Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB GDDR3. From the rainforest @ £106.99 (url ending B00ICUGOP0)

Can anyone find anything else more decent for the money? Also, I'm running my old GTX 9800....How is that in comparison?

Cheaper but not free delivery :) Think I'd personally prefer the Asus brand over MSI.

So would that be the best bang for buck card?

The 750Ti is a decent card and as Cyber said very low power consumption. It's a tiny bit slower than an R7 265 but as it's now cheaper than one this seems a reasonable tradeoff - the lower power use & thus hopefully quieter operation is just an added bonus. (I'd not really consider a 265 right now with the cheapest 270s being so close in price)

You'll see lots of older threads suggest the 750Ti is poor value for money as it used to be about the same cost as an R9 270, which is a noticeably faster card. At the moment though the 750Ti is looking good :) just enough price gap to the 270 in my eyes - the 270 at £114 may possibly have fractionally more bang for buck but it's really close and not worth worrying about.

Also, OCUK will give you free delivery if you link your forum account with your shop account as you've got enough posts to be eligible.

Yeah my account is linked but it would mean me buying it ;)

So, if he could stretch to say £120 and get the Asus AMD Radeon R9 270 DirectCU II OC 2GB GDDR5 on the rainforest, that would be better? Or would it be more than likely easier just to get the 750Ti as I'm not sure how good his power supply is to be honest.

Ehh... if you're not sure about his PSU I'd go for the 750Ti personally - though I guess if you know his old graphics card it should give us an idea of how much power to spare he has? (I don't actualyl know older cards power draws but I'm sure someone else / google could help)

Also sorry, totally missed that it wasn't for you! Thought it was surprising that such an active poster didn't know about the free delivery :p

The 270 is anything from 20 to 60% faster than the 750 Ti. For 10% more money that's way better "bang for buck".

Not good form to be insistent on using Amazon on this forum, good thing for you I'm not a mod.

Ocuk is cheaper and you get 2 games:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Powercolor Radeon R9 270 TurboDUO 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £113.99

I wouldn't worry about the PSU, it only needs 1 6 pin connector (edit: ocuk is wrong), 110-150 W max.

Oh and compared to a GTX 9800, about 2.5-3 x faster.

I'm not linking, so it's allowed unless the rules have changed dramatically :)

So, to confirm. The 270 is better than the 750Ti despite having a lower mhz clock (the one you linked is a 270 not a 270X?) due to the extra gubbins assumingly? Stream processors and the like?

EDIT: and thank you for comparing to my 9800 :p Sadly I still have an X2 4400+.......

You would get a far better card for the money in our members market. AMD 280's go for around £105, 280x for £120, 270 just sold for £70, GTX 670 around £90, GTX 770 £100-110.

Hehe, I linked him to bench results then didn't read them myself! A quick glance suggested 20% faster, which for 14% more cost is close enough cost/performance wise to not really worry about it. You're right though that in some situations the 270 is *much* faster and overall is probably more like 30% better, which is significant for the price difference. I tend to try and avoid being overly complimentary of AMD stuff as I've been accused of being an AMD fanboy enough times - perhaps overcompensated this time!

Delvis: Ignore the clock speed, and the two cards processor counts can't really be compared directly like that - performance is what matters. Also, if you're up for it, you should be able to clock a 270 up to 270X speeds easily enough - they're the same core.
