My Brother is looking for a graphics card to play Rift, he wants to play with max graphics and have decent FPS, he hasn't given me a price range, but he said he doesn't want to spend too much.

So anything which is capable of running Rift with max settings (or there abouts) and with decent FPS, is fine.

Cheers, much appreciated :)

At the very least...it would be good if you can give details of his current PC's spec- CPU, graphic card, PSU for example. We need to know this because let's say even if we paired a GTX680 with a Core2Duo or Athlon/Phenom II X2 for example, the frame rate would still be rubbish on Rift due to CPU bottleneck.

He said he's got an I5 2500k CPU, 8GB, 750W PSU and an ASRock Mobo (not sure which one)

From what I recall Rift scale better with Nvidia than AMD...if he doesn't mind 2nd hand, he should get a GTX480 for around £110-£120, and get a 3rd party cooler for around £30 so that he can overclock the nut of the GTX480 without its temp going out of control. The reason why I didn't suggest new card is that Nvidia current don't have a sub-£200 card that's desirable.

He said he'd rather have a new card and he's also now said that his budget is around £60-£80.

I played quite a few mmos I would usually agree with that comment, but from what I recall Rift is actually quite graphic demanding and not just hard on the CPU. But considering OP's friend's budget...I don't think he has much choice, and there's certain no good performing Nvidia card at the sub £100 price range...so yea...6850 is probably his only choice.

I also play many MMO's, granted, settings ie shadows and lighting will have to be turned down, but those 2 cards listed will still play the game at very acceptable settings, and like you said for the money quoted there is not much else out there.

I also haven't come across a recent MMO which does not tax the CPU, your lucky if you get over 50% usage on the GPU :).

no chance of getting it maxxed out on an nvidia card for 80 quid then, unless he gets a bargain from the MM or 2nd hand. Nvidia cards are ridiculously overpriced.

With that budget he has no chance of maxing the game out unless he uses a really low resolution. My 6950/6970 struggles to run the game maxed out at 1920x1080.
