16gb Corsair vengeance lpx ddr4 3200mhz
Integral nvme m.2 500gb ssd

We're looking for a graphics card suggestions around £150-300

He tends to player old games.
Need for speed
Garry mod
Counter strike 2

Thanks

What power supply are you using with that setup?

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £199.99 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Would fit the bill regardless.

I'd consider selling the 3200g CPU and seeing if you can get a cheap 3600/3700 or maybe a 5600 with the money leftover.
Thanks the chip was bought so he could play the day we put it together it was explained to him we would upgrade over time.

Was just looking in the store would this be any good along side that graphics card

Can't remember the brand but 650 watt 80 plus bronze psu

It should be okay, but do be aware that not all PSU's are equal and some can even be problematic or dangerous.

I'd personally look at getting a second hand 3600-3700X over the 5500 but it's not a terrible option if you'd rather go new.

As above I'd go for the RX6600.

Pick up a used Ryzen 3600 from CEX with a 2 year warranty for £70 and put the leftover money into a bit more storage (another 1TB can be had cheaply) as you'll very quickly run out of space with only 500GB.

Just to add to this, if you'd rather splurge the extra on performance over storage, you can pick up 5700X's for around the £120 mark second hand.

I'd argue that while he mostly plays older games, a 6600 GPU + 3600-5700 CPU based setup would comfortably play any modern title at 1080P as long as he's willing to lower certain settings.

No that was from a used retailer that gives a 2 year warranty and no cooler mentioned in post 6.

Ah! Fair enough, I missed the bit about the specific retailer.

I wouldn't spend more than £60 on one personally, and that's assuming the OP already has an HSF.

Regardless, a Thermalright Assassin King (5 heatpipe version) can be had for £15 and is a hefty improvement over any of the bundled AMD coolers.

~£70 for a 3600 is about the going rate, isn't it? The last few on the MM have gone for £60-70 with 5600s going for about £95-100 so I didn't think a 3600 with 2 years warranty for £70 was that bad.

The thing to bear in mind with the 5500 is that it doesn't support PCI-E 4.0 and only has 16MB of L3 cache. I'd personally go 3600 if you want more storage within the budget and try and stretch to something like a 5600 if you don't. I'm not sure what 3200Gs go for but if we say about £50 then you could do both.

It's a shame he doesn't have access to the MM as a 5700 XT just sold for £130. My brother is still using my old Ryzen 3600 and 5700 XT system and it's perfectly usable even at 1440p if you manage your expectations a bit in newer titles.

As to the OP's original question of which GPU I think we're all agreed on the RX 6600 if buying new.

+1 for RX6600. I picked one up for £165 brand new recently, for a budget 1080p build and it’s a superb card! Really is efficient as well making it cool during load.

Ah, fair enough. I wasn't aware of that. There's definitely an argument for the 5500 in that case.
The op can pick up a 5600 and a rx6600 for £315 new that's a decent 1080p machine considering budget for GPU was up to £300.

Or £30 saving with the 5500 but I would also go 5600 if op can afford it.

If the 5600 is better there is a little room I'm budget just didn't want £100-200 jump

Thanks

The 5600 is the better CPU. If you can afford the extra then it's the one to go for. If you swap the board out at some point for a B450/550 you'll get access to PCI-E 4.0 which will potentially be beneficial to your M.2 drives and GPU plus the extra cache is nice. You would also be able to drop in a 5800 X3D down the line if you want more performance, though they're still sought after so command good money even second hand.
