A friend of mine bought a 590 GTX. I tried to tell him not to but he did anyway!!!

Basically, he's running the card on a i5 (non k version (I forget which)) with 4 GB of Ram.

He's not getting brilliant performance (I run an i5 2500k with clocked 6950 and I get nearly the same).

I tried to figure out why, but I've reached the edge of my not so great knowledge... I need some help!!!

Is it true that a GPU needs the same amount of Ram to function correctly, i.e. for a 590 it will use 3 GBs as a cache?

I know his processor runs at about 70 % on BF3 so if he adds more memory will this make it run at its optimum?

Basically, what would he need to add/change to stop it bottlenecking on BF3? I'm guessing Ram but I don't want to give advice if I'm wrong!!!

Thanks,

I don't know about the technicalities of how the cache would work with the GTX 590 having 1.5GB per GPU but with BF3 several users have experienced improved performance with 8GB of RAM.

Some examples here, here and here.

They all upgraded from 4GB to 8GB.

I assume he has a 64 bit OS to make use of the extra RAM?

Thanks, I thought that was the case. I'll tell him to upgrade the ram. He spent all his money on the card. Its a cheap upgrade I guess.
