Graphics card issue

Well, I presume it's a graphics card issue...

My Mums monitor hasn't been turning on. I checked all the rear connections - all fine. The monitor is getting power but no output from the PC. I then tried another monitor and again, it's getting power but there's no display from the PC.

Im not clued up on PC hardware whatsoever but I'm assuming the monitor connection is on the back of the graphics card? So, it must be an issue with this?

She also needs data from the PC, would there be anyway of retrieving this from the HD if the monitor/display/card is broken?

The data should be fine if it is the graphics card.

I dont suppose you have a spare card to try out.? or try that card in your system.?

Unfortunately not, she has a laptop in the house but that's it. I use a mac so that's no use.

ahh, in that case have a go at removing the gpaphics card and reseating it.

See if the monitor works with the integrated graphics, if it does you then definitely know that the problem is being caused by the graphics card.

how do you know there is onboard graphics

It's a custom built PC. I believe there are no integrated graphics. There certainly wasn't any additional slots to plug the monitor into. Second thing I tried.

I'll give that a try. I did take the side of the case off but everything looked fine.

If that fails i would go back to the basics, Unplug all components apart from the mobo/cpu/1 stick of ram and the gfx card to try and get some sort of output on screen

Like kenny said, if reseating the GFX card doesnt work try stripping it down.

I've seen borked RAM sticks cause this to happen sometimes.
