Hello
I hope everyone had a great Christmas and wishing you a happy New Year.
I was lucky to get an Ati 4870 1Gb from Santa and it easily plays Crysis, CoDWaW and Far Cry 2 flat out.
It replaced my old BFG Geforce 8800 GTS 512 OC which I decided to fit into the kids system to give it a boost. Their system is an AMD dual core 2800 with 3Gb RAM based on an Asus A8R32-MVP-Deluxe mobo which has an Ati Crossfire Express chipset and an ATi X1900XT. It has a 650W PSU and Windows XP. I uninstalled all the Ati drivers using Driver Cleaner Pro and fitted the 8800 GTS. The system booted to the Windows user log on page and then hung. Once I actually managed to log on and get to the Windows desktop but the system hung after a few seconds. It won't boot to Safe Mode so in the end I refitted the Ati X1900 XT and everything works perfectly again.
I actually remember this problem when I bought the BFG. I even tried a full format and fresh Windows install but the install would not complete with the BFG card fitted.
So, whats the problem? Does the ATi chipset conflict with the Nvidia card or is it something else?
Can it be sorted out?
Cheers.

Sounds to me more like all traces of the previous drivers weren't completely erased?
Did you uninstall the drivers using the normal tools, then boot into safe mode and use Driver Cleaner Pro?

This card would not install even with a full format and fresh install of Windows on Asus A8R32-MVP-Deluxe motherboard.
Windows installation would hang. I've read somewhere that the BFG isn't compatible with VIA chipsets unless the bios are updated. Could the ATi chipset be the cause?
I bought this card from OCuk so if any techies have a clue please?
By the way it works fine on my Abit IP35-Pro so it's not faulty.
Thanks

There is a backwards compatibillty issue with some PCIE2 graphics cards and some VIA chipsets, it's a well documented fact. VIA couldn't fix the problem so Nvidia did a bios update for their affected cards. There isn't an issue with ATi chipsets though but I was wondering if there may have been.
Thanks though to Molemanmus for actually taking the time to read my post properly and for giving me the answer to the problem.
I disabled PEG Link in the bios and refitted the BFG 8800GTS and it now works a treat.
Cheers
