Graphics Card \ Mobo Problems

Hi - I'm in a bit of a dilemma and could do with some advice. I wouldn't normally panic over this sort of thing, but I've borrowed a friends rig while he goes travelling and I'm having some trouble. Yesterday, having got home from work I turned it on, and got nothing but a blank screen. The fans spin and I can hear hard drive activity so I think it's booting ok. I swapped out the GPU and put in a spare, and that seemed to work fine, so I assume the card was knackered. Just out of curiosity, I tried the "faulty" card in another rig, and it seems to be working fine. Now I don't know if the problem is with the graphics card, mobo or even the PSU so I don't know what to tell my mate. I have tried flashing the BIOS and resetting CMOS to no avail, and I've tried both SLI ports. With the original card in, on power up, the fans run at 100% for a lot longer than with a working card (not sure if that's relevant but thought I'd mention it).

Anyway, any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Oh dear could be in trouble then lol when is he back from traveling?

I would try ( if you have another rig ) just swapping parts about till you find the fault
i.e the psu ,mobo if possible , cpu "again" if possible , ram
Just eliminate everything you can before before telling him at least you can tell him what you have done to try to find the cause, but do tell him i'm sure you would want to know, and he might have had this issue before and know what it is.
I'm sure if you are upfront and are prepared to sort it out he will be ok.
good luck

Oh and welcome to the forums

Hi Nick!

Can you post the exact specs of Tom's PC?

I remember you said it was a 8600 GTS and a Asus board but which one exactly?

Bit of a bummer as its an HP build. He would need to upgrade the PSU, Mobo and GFX in order to make it a decent one. Heck, the case prolly sucks to.

My money is still on the motherboard being borked tbh.
