Graphics card naming conventions

I think that ATI and nvidia should make their naming systems lsightly different, not much but slightly

instead of having all this GTX and GT and GX2 and XTX rubbish, they should just mkae them

6600
6800
6900
7000
7100
7200

and onwards
and the cards should be progressivly more powerful the higher the nuber..

yes I know this will never happen because nvidia and ati love to attempt to confuse people with their XXX's etc into thinking low power cards are good....I mean they could make a 6200 XXX extreme ultra GX2 edition and people would think its good

just think its a bit stupid tbh

I know which ones are more powerful etc coz I keep up with the technology, but for people who don't it must be very confusing...damn corporations preying on peoples ignorance

(just making a point really, no real message intended) lol

I'm in agreement with you that the naming systems are confusing, but I am going to take it one step farther and say that I am bugged by the sheer number of models available.

Sure, it's choice, and choice is good because that way people get exactly what they want, but there comes a point where a lot of things are redundant and the refresh phases are the worst for this.

E.G. We just got rid of the X1900XT/XT-X for the X1950XT-X, despite the fact they perform the same and the only difference is GDDR4 memory. What's the point? We're also getting rid of the 7900GTX and replacing it with a 7950GT, which also performs the same. What's the point?

If it were up to me, we'd get an annual cycle as follows: -

2006 Budget: X1300 256MB
2006 Low-End: X1600 256MB
2006 High-End: X1800 256MB/512MB/Crossfire
2006 Enthusiast: X1900 256MB/512MB/Crossfire

2007 Budget: X2300 256MB/512MB
2007 Low-End: X2600 256MB/512MB
2007 High-End: X2800 512MB/Crossfire
2007 Enthusiast: X2900 512MB/Crossfire

2008 Budget: X3300 512MB
2008 Low-End: X3600 512MB
2008 High-End: X3800 512MB/1024MB?/Crossfire
2008 Enthusiast: X3900 512MB/1024MB?/Crossfire

Not with those cards obviously, but with four new cards every year with that sort of proportional power increase instead of just confusing the market.

I'm no economist though, I could be talking utter rubbish. :D

but in 2014 we would be back to the 9200 9500 9600 9700 and 9800 ... lol :D

"dear god, £500 for a 13 year old graphics card..."

Yeah but it would have an X in front of it. ;) X's make things faster as we all know by now. :D

indeed, through shear human belief alone, your card will go faster because you believe in the power of the extra printed character after the model number :D

Changed my mind now, no new graphics cards every year, just release the exact same ones with an extra couple of X's on the box depending on the number. ;) Would make a fortune. :D

No It doesn't

The GTX is faster than the 7950GT
Aye, I was going on word of mouth with that statement and only got around to actually reading the reviews myself about twenty minutes ago.

It's more like an OCed 7900GT, even more pointless. :p

I'm not

I'm looking for flawed post's that are stated with truth.

All I'm doing is presenting the facts.

And if someone claims something that is untrue then I will state fact.

This helps people make informed choices.

The whole point of this thread was for a bit of fun really as far as I can see it, so the truth doesn't really matter much, grey is as good as black here.

This thread isn't even about anybody making a choice, or anything of the sort. It's just a small rant about the naming system, so I don't see why you have to fly off the handle.

Of course, when you're trolling around and stalking me on the forums I guess any post will do if you can find fault with it, just like you're doing in two other threads.

There you go again.

Just talk about GFX cards

I will state fact about each one

When you make a post that is valid and has detail thats fine

But you claim you know, when clearly I can find inaccuracies in your argument.

Make them valid and real rather than conjecture. :)

And another thread bites the dust thanks to easyrider being bored and looking for a fight. Even when I correct myself, it's just not good enough for you until the thread is totally dead and buried.

You confuse people with the 7900 GTX is now being replaced with 7950 GT

I state this is wrong and you get miffed

Sorry for inputing facts.
