I'm getting desperate here so really hoping someone can help.

Basically i've come over to sort my dads computer which was extremely slow so he bought windows 7 and ive done a reformat and a new install of windows.

But it wont pick up the graphics card. Under device manager it just says 'standard vga graphics adapter' Using gpu-z it lists the card as HD6790 so i downloaded and installed the CCC from amd but still no joy. I can activate the second monitor which i know works as it flashes up on startup but then goes off when windows loads. CCC just states, like device manager that its 'standard vga adapter'

Any idea what more I can do??

Try an older Win 7 driver.

Standard VGA is always what it says before a driver is installed.

You could try running Windows update, that often picks up devices with no drivers loaded and goes off and finds an appropriate driver.

You could go into device manager and uninstall the graphics card then reboot, when windows boots up it should then re-install the hardware and allow you to install the drivers for it.

First, is there power to the 6970?

Second, and I'm clutching at straws here, but have you made sure that the card is selected in the BIOS, and is not set to boot using on-board graphics?

Little update on the issue, is that he managed to find the drivers disk it came with and when i used that everything worked, it recognised the card in device manager and i got my second screen back.

Then this morning i start with some bits still to do such as the sound card and after one of many reboots, its not recognised again. I have reseated the card itself, tried to update the driver again, but no joy.

I havent messed with the bios so will give that a try.

I tried windows update but after it finally got through 215 updates it didnt seem to help.

Thanks for the help.
