Firstly I was looking at getting a 4870X2 - then prices went up slightly. Next I looked at the 280 - which has also gone up by £40 :(

Any news on this super chip form NVIDIA?

I ordered a GTX 280 for £242 at the weekend, as I noticed prices seemed to be starting to creep up and I felt like getting in before it was too late as I fancied playing Crysis which I've been holding off on until now.

Biggest surprise really is the 4870, which was £180 on launch and is still at the same level or higher even now.

Personally I think the GTX 280 was/is 'underpriced' at <£250, when you consider that (ignoring the low on RAM and reliant on SLI 9800GX2) it is/was £90 cheaper than the only faster card.

Yeah, i'm in the same situatuon - WAR runs adequately on my aging 8800gtx, but i want something considerably better but less than £150 inc vat.

wow just noticed my self 4870 got up like 20£. and all other cards to. don't blame economy tbh

edit: sits and waits for 5870 lol or 450gtx+ ultra XxX leet edition

Change in the dollar. It's dropped a load in the last couple of months (from £1=$2 to about £1=$1.75) which means we pay more..

Most of our software suppliers at work have put prices up a good 15% to compensate, I'm expecting the same from Lenovo soon.

Sterling has actually strengthened slightly in recent weeks to around $1.84, although obviously this will take time to filter through on stock purchases.

Even then, we're only talking around a 7% fall compared to the summer, so there's really no reason to fully blame currency fluctuations... a product costing £240 should only have risen by around £20 in price.

Hmm, the manufacturers seem to be hedging their bets.

One of our suppliers with a US parent company implemented a 10% price rise last month (which equates to $1.80) and are forecasting another 8-10% as of 1st October.

I'm not happy as the rep called me four times yesterday and twice today to chase a large order...

The cards certainly have gone up in price! :( Was waiting on some cash to clear for me before I bought a pair for cards (2 x GTX 260) , and the next day they were up by £35!! Was keeping track of the 4870X2's as well and the cheapest one has gone up by quite a bit! The cheapest GTX 260 is somewhere close to £300...

Hello there :)

Same here about the prices :(, been keeping an eye on the HIS ATI Radeon HD 4850 IceQ 4 , was almost £130 now its gone back upto £140 :(, gonna have to make my 3870 last a bit longer i think :p

With Fallout 3, Farcry 2 and Sacred 2 on the way been looking for a better card, might hold off till father christmas can bring me one :D

Keep an eye on this.

The pound's heading in the right direction, but I suspect the build up of Xmas stocks will already be underway/done at existing weak rates. Even if the strengthening continues (a big if given that the UK economy is in no better shape than the USA) it'll be a while before prices come back down.

Having said that, if this Xmas is as poor for retailers as might be expected, there could be some excellent stock clearance (or even bankruptcy) sales in Jan/Feb.

PS As sales volumes fall, margin has to increase in order to protect the retailer's viability. That amplifies price changes. Similarly we've all benefited from several years when sales were good, competition was fierce, and margins were cut. Those times, I expect, wilkl not be back in a hurry. Invest in retro-gaming shares, go short on the Crysis graphics engine. ;-)

Hopefully I will see my BFG GTX260 OCX Maxcore arrive in Spain today. Sadly it got slightly delayed and missed the early flight yesterday via the courier (not City Link but the company who ship to Spain for me). Just checking now the price has gone up from £246 to £258

I can't wait to try out Crysis this evening.

I really want this card but it just makes NO sense at £258 :(

Hi there

This is a case in point, people bash on how prices will come down on new products, but they fail to recognise other factors which can effect pricing.

In this case since launch 4850/4870 pricing has hardly moved from manufacturers, simple reason is ATI don't need to cut the price they keep selling out.

However due to exchange rates and poor supplies of high demand products it has forced pricing up and with the economy as it is things don't look to get much better.

Are you saying that as the economy slides into recession luxury items remain in demand and thus price remains high?
