Graphics card prices :(

Are you saying that as the economy slides into recession luxury items remain in demand and thus price remains high?

It seems daft but it does tend to work like that with certain items.

Firstly I was looking at getting a 4870X2 - then prices went up slightly. Next I looked at the 280 - which has also gone up by £40 :(

Any news on this super chip form NVIDIA?

I agree that prices have been creeping back up recently. It is still better than 2 or 3 years ago though, when consumers were getting really reamed. Top end cards were routinely between £450 and £600 on release. I remember seeing a poor/stupid guy handover £740 for a Nvidia 7800GTX 512 in a shop on Tottenham Court Road...

The market won't tolerate that level of pricing these days.

I simply won't buy.- Top end GFX cards are luxury items anyway, it doesn't hurt to put off buying them. I think I'm going to be a generation behind from now on and just pick up the second hand bargains. The days of me having the latest are well and truly over I've learnt a hard lesson and lost to much money in the process.

As soon as a new card comes out the old ones lose so much money. I'll stick with my 8800gts 512 for now the pick up a 280 when every one wants to off load them cheap because there's a new latest and greatest card out, which seems to be every other month with Nvidia.

^ Agreed
The prices are totally ridiculous these days.

Not really, you don't have to get a £100+ GFX card. I use a 8800GT and it's awesome. ;)

Also, if less people buy the £300+ cards, prices will come down... Supply and demand I think it's called? I've never ever spent more than £200 on one single computer component, I can think of many better things to spend my money on.

I picked up a bfg 8800gtx oc2 for £80 to slap in sli for the time being.

Haven't been tempted with anything this generation, and these work fine for anything I want to run at the moment.
