Graphics card problem 7800GT

Hello

Since yesterday I have been having a few problems with my XFX 7800GT.

I keep getting a lot of tearing, sharp jagged spikes and blocks of strange pixels.

It started happening about every two hours now it's more like every 30 minutes.

Sometimes it also causes my PC to freeze

I contacted technical support of where I got the card from and they said to run NV temp Logger as they think the card is overheating.

That gave me these results:

Your graphic card Upper Temperature Limit is : 115 C

Core Temp : Max: 106 C Min: 93 C Average : 101 C.
Ambient Temp : Max: 0 C Min: 0 C Average : 0 C.

That's after a few hours of playing wow.

When I get the distortion it's when the card is in the hundreds but most of the time the card is running in the hundreds.

It's been doing it for the last 30 minutes.

Any ideas as to what the problem is?

Your temps seem really high, my XFX 7800GT runs idle @ 50-55`c . Load 60-80`c. Might be worth getting a new cooler for it.

OMG that's hot!!!

Open the case, is the fan on the gfx card actually going round? Some major case ventilation (one fan in and one fan out minimum) and a new heatsink and fan on the gfx card might be required.

As a general rule, a graphics card should never be hot enough to boil water...

It never crossed my mind that it was actually that hot.

The fan is working but everything is covered in a so much dust and fluff.

I'll give it a clean.

Thanks!

As a guide, my 6800 runs at about 52-54oC. Now I know it is a slower card but...

Find out what temp the card is after being idle for 30 minutes or so. If that is also high then it is possible that the heatsink isn't properly seated.

yer, giving your card a clean every 6 months is a good idea. recently reduced my 7600GT temp from 80C to 40C!, but it's coming back up again to around 58C. However it is in a small case. Using a fan that goes over a PCI slot can help a lot.

Had similar problems with my 6800Gt around 100C, due to the leadtek cooler. Try taking it off and then cleaning it out

I took the cover off of the card and gave it a clean with an excellent air spray.

There was so much crap inside and a not very nice burning smell.

It's now idle at 41`c and under load 60`c.

Good job I didn't have it overclocked.

Thanks for the advice all.

RMA-it if you still have warranty.

if not, clean your case, install some case-fans and get yourself a better GPU cooler (Zalman, Arctic Silencer).

The warranty ended on the 1st November but according to this http://www.xfxforce.com/web/support/showWarranty.jspa?regionId=1 it says all their cards have a two year warranty.

And this says http://www.neoseeker.com/news/story/4880/ life time warranty but is it just for the US?

What temps should I be getting?

I thought 40 - 60 was ok.

Get in touch with XFX and give them the serial number of your card - they will tell you if you still have manufacturer's warranty or not.

I was talking about the temp of your Gfx card - 101C average is waaay to hot! The card can take it but to run at this temp for longer periods and frequently is surely going to decrease the lifetime. This can be due to the heatsink/cooler not being seated properly, thus manufacturing fault.

Ok thank you.
