Just got CoD4 and wondered if upgrading my graphics card would help. Current spec is:

shuttle sn25p
athlon 3800 x2 (the first version of it so prob has lower cache?)
2x1gb geil val ram
bfg 7800gt oc
standard seagate hdds
usb creative sound card that I'm not using atm - maybe this would help CoD performance?

I'm not sure if the cpu would slow up a new gfx card if I got one - probably look to get something from members market for about £50-£70.

So would a new graphics card actually help, or are other bits too old?

your saying its an old machine, but tbf mate, that will easily do COD4.

my same machine with CPU @ 2.55ghz and X1950 did fine at mid/high settings and with my 3850 (a tiny bit quicker than the 8800GS) flys along maxed out

Dont underestimate the 3800x2 chip, it has a lot of potential for an old timer. do you know if it is a Toledo or Manchester core (easiest way to find out is CPU-Z)

for 55 quid as has been said....you canne go wrong :)

I kept default settings, apart from resolution - set it to 1024x768 but seemed a bit slow so put it back down to 800x600. I've got a 2nd monitor running, so I might see how the game fairs when I disable that.

thanks :)

run it at 800x600 and turn all settings off or low.set your fps to 125 do that easy my 7600gt used to.wont look great but will be very smooth for online play.

The 8800gs pwns the hd3850 in cod 4

To the op, your rig will play cod 4 no probs, i played it at med details on an x850xt and it was ok.

yeah i was totally torn between the 8800 and my 3850, the 8800 steams ahead in some games once OC'd :)

I'll have a fiddle with settings. just found out my cpu is a manchester variant. unsure if that is good or not?

The manchester was the better of the 2 cores, and has a better reputation for knocking out good clocks :). 2.5ghz should be easy life.

i think my settings are 255x10 / 3xHTT / and ram is at 166mhz

i used to have a 7800gt and it played cod fine on high settings if you dont mind turning things like specular mapping and shadows off.

Old machine? :(

Yep as said get the cpu to 2.4ish and it wont hold back the gpu at all.

Cpu is more important at low res though.

Shadows is a killer on cod4 so if you turn that off it will run a lot better ...tho not look as pretty of course but when online whose concentrating on the graphics :)

my bios wont let me do more than 10.0 multiplier and I dont think the bus speed is too great. not sure I'll be able to go much past what I have atm - 10.0 x 215
