graphics card question

ok my question is -can any graphics card run on any mother board .. im thinking no tbh but how can i tell if i can use it or now when buying ... im using the ATI Radeon HD 4800 series atm and its very good dont get me wronge but i wanna be able to run anything ...

my example if help is ... i got the witcher 2 and thought my pc can run this np
but when i go to setting i can only run on low spec lol ... ultra spec = jump jump jump and nothing but lag

i had to upgrade from a 450 because of the graphics card im running so i got a Power cool 80plus Mod eXtreme

budget on a graphics card is around £250 but maby push alittle more
