Graphics card recommendation

Hey guys,

I think my current graphics card, HD7870, is starting to die. Ubuntu fails to work with my primary monitor (DVI input), issues installing drivers on Ubuntu and getting BSOD whilst playing DoTA on Windows. All of this has previously been fine but issues are slowly creeping in.

My current spec is i5 at 4.3GHz, 8GB of RAM and this is my PSU. I think I want to give Nvidia a try so looking for recommendations for a graphics card that will work well with my current system.

I'd ideally like to spend £125 but if there's something that gives good bang for buck I'm willing to deviate a bit from that.

Thanks for any help!

I think your best bet would be stretching for an AMD 280x, you could got for the Nvidia GTX 960 but they don't offer much performance for the price and as can be seen in the link below the AMD 280x will perform quite a bit better. I wouldn't want you to stretch your budget and then have to settle but if you're really adamant on Nvidia then the 960 is what I'd look at. I generally recommend new stuff but you can always shop around for second hand stuff if it helps too.

Thanks.

I won't rule out ATI entirely but they don't have a great track record when it comes to linux. The fact the card is dying in a pretty subtle way means an RMA will prove more hassle than it's worth which is kinda irritating.

In that case your looking at either a 750ti or stretching to a 960. You've got the posts to use the Overclockers second hand forum, If you don't mind buying like that have a look and see if anything falls into your price range such as a 760 maybe. I think the 750ti will be okay for 1080p if your fine with tweaking the settings. Not wanting an AMD card lowers the options considerably.

For the price id try and get a 280, but really even 3 years later a 7870 (270X) still sells for £120. Progress lol.

The 750Ti is a real downgrade from a 7870 but a 960 is ok now it's cheaper.

I really would spend £120 for a 750 or a 960 going from a 7870 its not that more powerful.
960 is approx 14% more powerful than the 7870. You really want a 280x 60% improvements or a 280 would be approx 50%
